RaX30 does not detect internet, but N600 does

I bought a new Nighthawk router, RAX30, and have tried power cycling both modem and router together and separately and even swapped which one got power cycled first, tried the nighthawk app, tried the setup wizard on 192.168.1.1, which on its troubleshooting asked me to enter the Mac address of the last device that worked, and none of these methods worked. So after quite a bit of trying and retrying, I plugged my old netgear dualband N600 and internet worked just fine. It seems to be the router, because I can use the N600, but even using the N600 Mac address doesn't work for the Nighthawk. I don't need a login, I receive dynamic ips, dns is automatically provided by ISP. So not quite sure where to go from there. When I was poking around on 192.168 I stumbled on a firmware update button, it claimed firmware was up to date but I'm not sure how it would know since to date it's not connected to the internet 🤔

What is that modem? Make and model?

When rebooting things you have to do it in the right order.

Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:

  • Turn off and unplug modem.
  • Turn off router and computers.
  • Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
  • Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
  • Turn on computers and rest of network.

You do not need an Internet connection to update the firmware. Download it with something else and then manually update the firmware with the download.

How do I manually upgrade firmware to my NETGEAR router? | Answer | NETGEAR Support

What is that router. (N600 is a wifi speed, not a model number.)

When you replace a router, you may have to reset the modem. Then add the router and take it through its setup process.

Try to avoid the Nighthawk app. A manual setup with a wired connection to the router is more reliable and gives you more control over the process.

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.

Check the section in the manual Manually set up the Internet connection.
