Slow Wireless Connection XR1000

When I directly connect to my cable/router modem (Motorola MG7700 Modem WiFi Router) via ethernet, the speed goes 600+Mb. However, my 5-GHz Wifi never exeeded 200Mb (and the 2Ghz is around 85Mb). I suspected that my modem's router was not strong enough, so I got a better/seperate router (NETGEAR Nighthawk Pro Gaming 6-Stream WiFi 6 Router (XR1000)) but still, the WiFi speed is around 200Mb.

I used the speed test on the nighthawk app and it showed 600+, so it seems that it can receive the full speed from the cable modem, so I am not sure why the WiFi is not also 600+. (I did the tests right next to the router to take the distance factor into account).

This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the NG router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the NG router gets from the modem. https://kb.netgear.com/25891/DMZ-on-NETGEAR-routers?_ga=2.190834155.1964120923.1641394007-133989108....
https://kb.netgear.com/24086/How-do-I-set-up-a-default-DMZ-server-on-my-Nighthawk-router?_ga=2.11258...
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the NG router to the modem, LAN to LAN configure AP mode on the NG router.

Netgear has set up a community forum specifically for the NightHawk Gaming Router products. Most of the people who watch that forum are more likely to have experience with NH gaming router products:

Re: Slow Wireless Connection XR1000

Thank you so much for your detailed reply :).

Option 1 is not an option, because my ISP doesn't help if the modem is not their rental.

I tried option 3 (Enabled AP) but the speed is still around 200Mb (haven't rebooted the modem, just rebooted the router).

I also tried option 2 (please kindly see  below images if I did it correctly), but in all cases the wireless speed never exceeded 200Mb:

Re: Slow Wireless Connection XR1000

Is WMM, MIMO and Beamforming enabled on the router?

Check the connection rate of your wireless device with wifisweetspots with your device connected near the router.

Might try a factory reset and setup from scratch.

DMZ looks good.

And what FW version are you using?

Re: Slow Wireless Connection XR1000

One important thign to check is which client device did you use the test the WiFi speeds?

If the XR1000's built in speedtest is detecting the full speed, but your client device is getting stuck around 200Mbps on both the ISP's routeer and the XR1000, then there is a chance that your WiFi client could be one that is using a connection method such as a single stream 802.11ac 80MHz cvhannel width over a single stream for a 433Mbps PHY, which can often top out at 200Mbps due to the overhead in that method.

Re: Slow Wireless Connection XR1000

Wanted to also add that it seems your cable modem/router has a bridge mode. In their instructions the relevant section lists the following:

  • Click on Advanced on the top right-hand corner.
  • Click on wireless, then Radio.
  • Under 2.4 you will need to disable the wireless radio and the select save. You will notice the 2.4 wireless LED on the front of the router turn off.
  • Follow the same steps as listed above for the 5g radio. You will see the 5g LED go off as well once saved.
  • Click on Status, then click on Connections.
  • The setting you’re looking for is eRouter Provisioning. Click on the drop-down menu to make it say Bridged. Click Save.
