Smart Connect

My RAX20 seems to be forcing a 5 ghz connection to my computer.  I have set my computer's wifi adapter to prefer 2.4 mhz but it still is connecting at 5 ghz.  My computer disconnects from wifi or if connected at 5 ghz there is no internet.  My computer is at a distance from the router and I know that 5ghz is not a good choice at that distance but Smart Connect is not as smart as I am.  Is there a way to  set a preference per device and override Smart Connect for my computer?  (I've been generally happy with Smart Connect for almost 5 months, since I got this router but I have had problems with some web pages not loading even when I refresh them, they seem to time out.  I'm thinking Smart Connect is probably the reason.  It wasn't annoying enough for me to take the time to address it but, now, losing internet every few minutes is.)

Re: Smart Connect

1. you can disable smart connect.

2. what firmware is on the router.

3. what modem/gateway are you connected to?

4. do you have ipv6 enabled? (try enabling it)

Re: Smart Connect

1. Okay, I set my router up without it at first but changed to it. I got a new router, this one, because my two firetv sticks were reporting connection problems and/or buffering content.  Regardless of which band I set the firetv sticks to, this router did not change that until I set it on Smart Connect.  (I think the FireTV sticks, 4k versions of the sticks, are slow because of the firehose of ads (for channels they want you to subscribe to and shows they want you to watch) they throw in on top of the base content.  I may disable Smart Connect but then I'll need to get another streamer, maybe one with WPA3 or a shield.

2. The latest firmware: V1.0.11.112_2.0.77

3. Motorola MB7420.

4.Hmmm...  Surfshark vpn doesn't allow IP6.

The speedtest on the router says my download speed is 234 mbps

Thanks

Re: Smart Connect

Additional information:

Yesterday Xfinity sent me an email that they had doubled my connection speed.  They said to reboot my modem.  I rebooted my modem and the router.  My problem started after that reboot.   Even though the router is set to automatically update its firmware I wonder if it hadn't updated since the 072222 release of the latest firmware and if rebooting yesterday caused a firmware update.  Could such a firmware update be the source of my problem?

When your Internet service changes, you need to get the router to forget any settings that it inherited from the old service. Something may have changed in the basic settings that are no longer compatible with the new service.

As well as a reset remember to restart the whole network in the right order.

Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:

  • Turn off and unplug modem.
  • Turn off router and computers.
  • Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
  • Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
  • Turn on computers and rest of network.

Re: Smart Connect

You put in there that you're using a vpn. Do you have that installed to the router or running it on each device?

Reason I ask is vpn's can slow connections and cause streaming issues.
