Bad connection to Orbi RBS850 satellite

Hello I bought an Orbit RBK853 (with RBR850 and RBS850) before Christmas 2019. I'm about to throw the device out and buy another product, because I have several problems so far and still no solution.
a) the Netgear support is an endless loop I tried 3 times over 40 min at different times and now I have given up. I am already quite annoyed about the manufacturer and product.
b) I have a signal strength of -50 dBm when measuring the network quality, which I find very low when I am about 2m away from the device. Is this normal?
c) in addition (same distance approx. 2m) the signal breaks off from time to time while gaming. It's not my network provider's fault, because my computer, which is connected via LAN cable, can surf perfectly.
The only thing stopping me from throwing the device out is the price and the effort for new installation. Possibly the device is also simply defective - I speak parallel with my handler.
With the problems I have (quality) I can't recommend this part. Also here with AX Forum you can not select the product.
Some technical information: Firmware V3.2.10.11, 5GHz, Channel 8 or if you need more info please contact me.
best regards Urban

Re: Bad connection to Orbi RBS850 satellite

What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Is the Orbi system operating in Router or AP mode?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected. https://kb.netgear.com/000036466/How-far-should-I-place-my-Orbi-satellite-from-my-Orbi-router

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Try disabling the following and see:
IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Set Short preamble instead of Long preamble modes. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s). Be sure that CTS and RTS values are changed to 2347 under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update?

Try sending a forum Moderator a PM if you want NG support help.

Ask about an RMA if one is needed...

Re: Bad connection to Orbi RBS850 satellite

It maybe possible that this model has a built in router and wifi already...if so, This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

Try setting manual channel to 1, 6, 11 or 13. Use a web browser to log into the RBRs web page to change channels, you can't change channels using the Orbi app.

Re: Bad connection to Orbi RBS850 satellite

thank you for the answer. I have now had the time to reinstall everything again. So far it looks like I have no more connection problems. But every now and then the network is still very weak 3Mbps instead of 500Mbps. I will now renew all my old Ethernt cables to Kat7 and hope to have a really good network 🙂 Thanks again!
