Network Round Trip Time Spikes ever few Seconds on Orbi ax4200 RBR750
When pinging google on command prompt the ping rises occasionally, but when playing games like valorant the network round trip time or ping spikes up every like 2 seconds.

Just finished troubleshooting and experimenting with everything I could. The thing that was causing it was actually the power extenders! When changing the router plug into an actual outlet in the wall the wifi was great. It was lightning fast. At least I know now.

Is there another box unit that the RBRs WAN port is connected too or is this to wall jack? If there is another unit, then look at the units stick, in back or under, to see a mfr and model# of the modem or ONT unit.

If the mfr is manufacturer then it's netgear and the model is CM400. I also have have access to the settings of my motem but not sure if I should change anything in there.

Have the ISP check the signal and line quality UP to the modem. Be sure the ISP provisions the modem correctly.
Be sure there are no coax cable line splitters in the between the modem and ISP service box.
Be sure your using good quality RG6 coax cable up to the modem.

Can you attached a screen shot of ping plot and a capture of the ping command ran from a wired PC thats connected to the RBR. I would disconnect ALL other devices from the RBR temporarily. Change the SSID name temporarily so that wireless devices won't connect. Then run these two tests with you PC connected to the RBR. Test with and with out the game running.
- ZipsyNov 10, 2020AspirantSorry I am not able to provide a screenshot anytime too soon. But I ahve tried this before and the ping still spikes. Its just that overall ping compared to the wireless is like 2 ms faster.

Here is the chart but in game the network round trip time spikes in sort of a pyramid shape. It seems that the real effects of this are apparent in game when it spikes. The first one is an image of the ping when connected to the router.
This is an image of the ping when connected to a satellite
The ping on the satellite is better than when the router is. The satellite is right next to my laptop so distance shouldn't be an issue. - FURRYe38Nov 10, 2020Guru - Experienced User
Here is my ping to Google using a wired PC connected to a ASUS wireless bridge connected to my Orbi AX system:
- ZipsyNov 11, 2020AspirantYours looks fine. Mine is weird.

Are ping times the same if you ping the routers LAN IP address?
- ZipsyNov 11, 2020Aspirant
The ping spikes are still there it's just the overall ping is lower.

Do same test with RBS disabled and if you can with the RBR disconnected from the modem and all other devices disconnected from the RBR. IF you still see some spikes, I would presume there maybe some thin in 7 series FW that differs from 8 series FW and something that NG should look into.

Still spiking
- ZipsyNov 11, 2020Aspirant
When connected only to the router the spikes are even worse and last longer.

Wondering if your system is faulty here. I would ask NG support to look into this. Ask about an cross shipping RMA and see if another system does same thing....
- ZipsyNov 11, 2020Aspirant
What is a cross shipping RMA. Sorry I'm sort of new to this stuff.

In the meantime are there any other solutions or things to find out where it went wrong? It's super prefered if I can fix the router.

NG sends you a new system however takes your credit card info. If you don't send either unitt back, then NG charges you for the additional unit. I've done this a few times to check if new systems works or not. Helps to keep something running while you waitt on the new unit to arrive.

Here, I'll explain my situation. My family bought a new router because our old router was breaking and disconnecting but the ping was still fine it was just old and reboots sometimes. We bought a new router to try and fix it but our family is scared of the current virus so we don't buy anything online and rarely go outside at all. Now that the wifi works it's fine for them but it's not for me since I am on the esports team for my school and the ping spikes are losing us games. My family doesn't return it because it works for them but it really doesn't work for me. I hope this message doesn't stop you from trying to help me.

Do you still have the old router? What mfr and model is it?
- ZipsyNov 11, 2020Aspirant
It's an old Linksys EA6900
- FURRYe38Nov 11, 2020Guru - Experienced User
So does this router work a far as the wired portion goes? If it does, try this, disable ALL wifi radios on the EA6900. Set it up as your host router, then configure the RBR for AP mode. Connect the WAN port of the RBR to a LAN port behind the EA6900.
Test see if ping spikes are still happening with just the RBR running for wifi.
I tried one of those when they first came out. I remember there was a heat problem, wonder if Linksys fixed that. :smileyembarrassed:
- ZipsyNov 12, 2020AspirantIts a fairly old router and likes to disconnevt but if the ping doesnt spike does that mean a problem for the ng router?
- ZipsyNov 12, 2020Aspirantas in the ea6900 was replaced because it disconnects constantly. It always reboots.
- ZipsyNov 12, 2020AspirantIll try a few experiments with the EA and see.
