Netgear Orbi pro SXK80 - internet isn't working for device with wired connection on router

Hi, I would like to share an issue I am currently trying to fix since I bought the orbi SXK80.

Currently I am using the firmware v 4.2.0.112

I am trying to understand why when i have a device connected to the router switch, I can reach it from any lan network and any connection (wire or wireless).

Today I connected a raspberry pi using wire connection with the network interface using the following configuration - default vlan 1 - trunk

When I run "sudo apt update" I can't update anything. However, when I am moving it to the satellite switch (with same network interface config), it works perfectly.

I connected my macbook on the same network interface in the router, but I can't go to internet.

FYI, when I using a ping with name or ip for google for example, it's answering me.

I am trying to understand what's happening, does anyone faced the same issue there?

I can share any configuration detail if needed.

Thanks,

Can you please provide the configuration used on the Pi for the eth0 port?

When devices are connected to the wired Ethernet ports on the router, there is no need to specify a VLAN. The Pi is in Vlan 1 by default.

I love my Orbi.

Re: Netgear Orbi pro SXK80 - internet isn't working for device with wired connection on router

Hi, thanks for your answer.
My eth0 is using static ip with no vlan configuration.
I am having the same exact problem with my macbook using dhcp. And also a philips hue bridge. It can’t get internet when connected to my router (wire) but it’s working on my satellite. I am starting to think my router switch never worked properly. I made a factory reset on my router this afternoon and it’s still the same.

For information I configured my pppoe using vlan35 (Bell Canada) in my wan interface. It’s directy connected to the fiber using a fiber/rj converter. I have no idea if it could have an impact. Maybe I should try to use the router as AP to see if the result is the same

Re: Netgear Orbi pro SXK80 - internet isn't working for device with wired connection on router

If nothing works on the router Ethernet ports, then it very well may be a mechanical fault.

Just to "double check", in the past, I have messed up static IP configurations by:

  • Picking the wrong subnet.  i.e. Orbi is usually 192.168.1.x for the primary network.
  • Using the wrong subnet mask. Orbi is 255.255.255.0
  • Defining the wrong gateway IP.  i.e. 192.168.1.1 should be the primary network gateway.

The Orbi Pro series offers more complexity than the residential products (and perhaps more chances to mess up).

I am much more comfortable reserving IPs in the LAN setup table than defining static IPs on devices.

I love my Orbi.

Re: Netgear Orbi pro SXK80 - internet isn't working for device with wired connection on router

Thanks for sharing your experience.

using dhcp or static ip is giving me the same result.

When my raspberry is connected with ethernet to the router (192.168.1.2). My laptop can reach it from wifi from the same network and also from wifi on another network (SSID using vlan 10). I can connect using ssh.

That's why I feel it very weird, my lan is working well, however, when the device using ethernet from the router try to reach internet, it's not working (browsing internet with macbook or apt update with raspberry).

It's like there is no logic that's why I'm opening the topic, I can't find it 🙂

Re: Netgear Orbi pro SXK80 - internet isn't working for device with wired connection on router

What a puzzle!

  • Devices connected to the satellite, both wired and WiFi, can do everything
    • Access other devices on the LAN, including devices wired to the router
    • Access the internet
  • Devices connected to the router WiFi can do everything (LAN and internet)
  • Devices connected to the router wired ports can access LAN resources, but not the internet

Are the router VLAN settings "default"? (zero configuration changes)

The product description seems to indicate that the SXK80 comes with 5 Years of Insight Premium Subscription

https://www.netgear.com/support/product/sxk80.aspx

Was this the case when you bought it?  Guess I should say, does that apply in Canada?

I love my Orbi.

Re: Netgear Orbi pro SXK80 - internet isn't working for device with wired connection on router

A big puzzle! 😄

  • Devices connected to the satellite, both wired and WiFi, can do everything - correct
    • Access other devices on the LAN, including devices wired to the router - correct
    • Access the internet - yes correct
  • Devices connected to the router WiFi can do everything (LAN and internet) - yes
  • Devices connected to the router wired ports can access LAN resources, but not the internet - correct

An example:

macbook using default network 192.168.1.0/24 with ethernet on router can:

  • access http to my hue bridge (ethernet in router)
  • access https to my synology (ethernet in satellite)
  • both are on vlan 20
  • can ping google or 8.8.8.8

macbook using default network 192.168.1.0/24 with ethernet on router can't:

  • surf the web

In the beginning I though the problem was comming from DNS configuration. But whey I move the ethernet cable to the satellite, everything was becoming fully functional. I tried both with auto dns from ISP and Open DNS config in internet and LAN 1 config to be sure everything was ok.

I shared with you both config from Switch config and LAN 1

Are the router VLAN settings "default"? (zero configuration changes): default and custom config, same result ^^

The product description seems to indicate that the SXK80 comes with 5 Years of Insight Premium Subscription: correct, I will see if I can contact someone from netgear in same time.

Thanks again for helping me thinking this, I'm sure as always I forgot or miss something, but this time it looks like internet browsing and other stuff is blocked from router.

Re: Netgear Orbi pro SXK80 - internet isn't working for device with wired connection on router

Way over my head.  Page 88 talks about Trunk vs. Access mode and when packets are tagged vs. untagged.  Oh, My!

https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/SXK80/Orbi_Pro_WiFi_6_UM_EN.pdf

I thought that ISPs required VLAN to be set specifically for IPTV. On my ancient Orbi, defining VLAN means that VLAN packets do not go through the NAT process when directed to devices on VLAN ports.  (The old Orbi has no concept of VLAN internally.)

Maybe something Bell Canada could comment on?

I love my Orbi.

Re: Netgear Orbi pro SXK80 - internet isn't working for device with wired connection on router

In my definition:
- Trunks means you let the device tag the packets, if no tag, it goes to selected vlan by default.
- Access, means the orbi will tag the packets for the defined vlan. You can only have one.

But still can’t understand what is happening. 😅

Definitively not correct. Over time, I've seen several similar reports here in the community.

This should work on the LAN ports of the satellites as well as on the router.

@BruceGuo please 8-)

Lack of an SXK80 (or any other recent Orbi Pro), I can't help here.

What do you mean? Just to be sure? Maybe I miss something?

Just confirmed that I've read similar posts that there is or was an issue with just the router ports, while the satellite ports behave correct.  @BruceGuo was this issue recognized fixed in the meantime?

Re: Netgear Orbi pro SXK80 - internet isn't working for device with wired connection on router

Hello,

Thanks for the answer. FYI, the only way to get the network interface working for my router is to assign it with the same vlan as the ISP (trunk or access both works). I added the vlan (35 in my case) to a LAN network. You can see the attached screen to see the only way to make it work.

If there is a patch to install to fix it, I will be glad to do it.

shudder 8-(  Not sure you had posted this before, or it came from another community member, Extend the WAN-VLAN to the LAN-VLAN ... shudder shudder. @BruceGuo please ... this does not look right.

Re: Netgear Orbi pro SXK80 - internet isn't working for device with wired connection on router

To give you more details, the vlan 35 is assigned to my wan port and get public IP.

For my lan ports using vlan 35, it is a private network 10.1.35.0/24 and the router get the IP 10.1.35.254

As I said before, any other vlan in my router interface isn't able to reach internet as web browsing for a macbook and sudo apt update from a debian (but lan communications, ping and tracert is working). That's above my logic tbh.
