Re: New - RBR850 / RBS850 Firmware Version 4.6.14.3 Released

@FURRYe38 I was checking out your statistics and comparing to mine.  My 2.4ghz status is 573.5, half of your 1147.  Any idea why that would be?  I thought it might be since I have my 2.4 band set to 50%, but was under the impression that only affects signal strength, not the bandwidth.

My 2.4 Ghz status is also 573.5. My 2.4 Ghz transmitting power is set to 25%.
LAN ports have a constant uptime since the update (4 days now). No resets to zero.

Re: New - RBR850 / RBS850 Firmware Version 4.6.14.3 Released

I found it....I unchecked off the 20/40 MHZ co-existence and it went to 1147.  I guess I will see if all of my older devices work now.

The WiFi data rates shown on that screen represent the maximum theoretical possible.  In actual practice, the farther a device is from a WiFi access point and the more obstacles are in the radio path, the lower the actual link rate will be.

Re: New - RBR850 / RBS850 Firmware Version 4.6.14.3 Released

@tjtrimble: what is the status on this? Are your older devices still connecting? Since I have started using Netgear years ago I learned that you should’t turn the 20/40 co-existence off, because of interference with neighbouring networks and compatibility with older 2.4 Ghz devices. What is your experience? And what is the advantage of having 1147?

Re: New - RBR850 / RBS850 Firmware Version 4.6.14.3 Released

So far everything looks good.  I have some 10+ year old cameras/printers I still use that I was concerned that may not work (not sure if they are wireless G or N).  I'm hoping the higher potential bandwidth (1147) could help a distant outdoor Ring camera load recorded video faster.

Yes, I disable 20/40Mhz Co-existance on my systems. I haven't seen any issues with this setting.

Re: New - RBR850 / RBS850 Firmware Version 4.6.14.3 Released

I've upgraded my RBS 850 FW without problems I think.  When I download the file for the router, I don't see a file ending in .img. The router file ends in .chk.  Am I suppose to use this instead? Thanks

Yes. Netgear uses several file types.

The FW update instructions for the satellite says "select .img or .chk but the router instructions just say ".img". then it says "Be careful not to select wrong file". Just double checking to make sure I don't mess this up 🙂

If you select a "wrong file", it simply will refuse to update.  Could you please do a me a favor and post a screen show showing the instructions mentioning multiple file types?

The only file I see on the desktop ends in .chk

Re: New - RBR850 / RBS850 Firmware Version 4.6.14.3 Released

Thanks for posting the image. That appears to be a generic Netgear "knowledgebase" article.

I have not learned a reason for the difference, but different models of Netgear router have different image file formats.  The original Orbi routers and satellites used "img" files, and (dumb me) when people asked about working on their AX products, I assumed that they also used "img" file format.  But, oh no, the AX uses "chk".  Whatever format is inside the "zip" file is the correct format for that product.

Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.

Re: New - RBR850 / RBS850 Firmware Version 4.6.14.3 Released

Updated. Strange to see the Satellite report 2.5G network is up to 573 Mbps instead of the 1147 Mbps it used to say. The Router still lists 1147. In the past the Satellite reported the same as the Router.

The other thing that was strange in my process was the Firmware update page stated there was an update on the Router but not the Satellite. I manually updated after downloading the files and performing it on the Satellite first.

Could you post a screen shot of the satellite showing speed information for the 2.5G port?

Re: New - RBR850 / RBS850 Firmware Version 4.6.14.3 Released

Thanks for humoring an Old Fart.  I was confused by the typo (2.5G rather than 2.4G). This comes from being overly literal.

Two mental lapses at the same time because I also imagined that the RBS850 had a 2.5G port (which it does not).

You are correct that the satellite should report the same "maximum speed" as the router (which devices seldom actually realize).

Sorry to be a bother.

LOL! Guess I should fix it. Didn't realize I mistyped the 2.x. Thanks for pointing that out!

Logged into the router and updated the firmware through the admin page. Edited to include changing the DHCP pool to between .100 and .200. Worked flawlessly.

Impressive.

Thanks for the notice Furry!

Re: New - RBR850 / RBS850 Firmware Version 4.6.14.3 Released

Finally received my RBK852 on the 29th. I had just jumped on a $150 discount from Amazon and was worried because Amazon had missed the first delivery date. Installed it with the IOS Orbi app and updated the firmware during setup.

Comments:

  • used the same SSID as my previous RBK50 setup, all connections restored automatically, IoT devices included
  • ISP speed test: download 769.8 Mbps, upload 32.2 Mbps
  • router main floor, satellite in basement office, 3 story, home (2200 sq ft)
  • basement desktop cable connection to satellite, Link speed (Receive/Transmit): 1000/1000 (Mbps)
  • basement laptop with wifi 6 card, wireless connection to satellite, 5 GHz band, channel 48, Link speed (Receive/Transmit): 1201/1201 (Mbps)

So far, I am happy with this investment. My prior Orbi, the RBK50 with one satellite served me well for many years. Especially since I switched to the Voxel firmware about 2 years ago. Everything got quicker and absolutely no drops. But for now, the Netgear firmware with the 852 is doing its job - very pleased.

Re: New - RBR850 / RBS850 Firmware Version 4.6.14.3 Released

I use my RBR850 in access point mode, not router mode. I use a different DHCP server (ie not my Orbi) to assign IP addresses to all devices on my network, including the Orbi's, and I have those IP addresses set up in a local DNS server (also not my Orbi). With this setup, I can go to https://ap1.example.com (not the real domain name, but you get the idea) and get the RBR850 login prompt, after which I can access the web interface for the router.

Just updated 3 RBS850s and 1 RBR850 to V4.6.14.3_2.3.12. Post upgrade, accessing the web interface on the RBR850 generates an HTTP error 500 (Internal Server Error). I can access the web interface by using the ip address directly, ie https://10.10.10.36 (also not the real ip address, but you know....). On the RBSs I can access their web interface just fine via https://ap2.example.com. Once I have accessed the web interface, everything seems to work fine, satellites are synced, WIFI works, etc.

I did a factory reset on the RBR850, and restored settings from backup. Same result. I did another factory reset, and manually configured all settings without doing a restore. Same result. I've tried multiple browsers on multiple computers, including clearing browser caches. Same result: HTTP Error 500 Internal Server Error.

Anyone have ideas how to troubleshoot and/or resolve this?
