modem is a spectrum docsis 3.0 with VoIP. the satellite is close enough, connectivity between the satellite and router is not an issue. Like I said, the whole local network is fine, the issue is WAN.
since I updated the firmware on the satellite, the connection has been stable. that doesn't sound like it makes any sense to me either, but I'll take it. If it happens again, a factory reset will be the next step I try though, thanks.

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected. https://kb.netgear.com/000036466/How-far-should-I-place-my-Orbi-satellite-from-my-Orbi-router
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?
Factory reset the RBR and RBS and setup from scratch. Press the back reset button for 15 seconds then release.
