RBK752 : smartphone will try to reconnect endlessly when moving around the house
Hello to everyone,
I have the following situation home : Router from ISP provider in the basement. From there, 3 ethernet cables. Two of the cables are connected to an Access point from my ISP (each cable, so that makes 2 Access point in the house). The last cable is connected to the RBK750 router which I have set to AP mode. The satellite is one fllore above and connected like it should via waves. The wifi name and password are the same everywhere in the house, what I mean is there is only one Wifi network with the same name in the house.
Everything works well except that sometimes (not always), when walking in the house with a smartphone (not only mine, other as well), sometimes the phone will try to reconnect to the WIFI network, but without any success. But as soon as I disconnect the phone (by enabling flight mode for example) and immediately after I reable wifi on the phone, it will succeed in reconnecting to the WIFI network immediately.
At first, I thought, this is because my phone is switching from the wifi network of one the ISP access point, so there is a kind of incompatibility I guess with ORBI. But this only happens sometimes, not always.
So I suppose there is something else. I was wondering maybe Armor security had something to do with it, or maybe something else with IP adress confict ? But normally, since my RBK750 is set to AP mode, only my ISP router in the basement should assign IP adress to the connected devices.
Anyway, thanks for your help !

Re: RBK752 : smartphone will try to reconnect endlessly when moving around the house
You're mixing technologies. The orbi mesh has smart roaming built in to function on its connected router/satellites. The other AP's won't integrate with the orbi like that. So if a device is connected to one of the other AP's its going to tend to be "stickier" in that it won't want to roam until the signal is almost unusable (as you're finding out).
Maybe at times you're connected to an AP that has just enough coverage when walking around versus others being further away. That can cause the symptoms you're seeing.

Thanks for your answer. It might be so, but I don't think it is the answer, as I have tries many times to walk from my ISP access point area to Orbi area and not always my phone won't reconnect. Sometimes, it actually swith like it should.

Re: RBK752 : smartphone will try to reconnect endlessly when moving around the house
Again, its because your mixing systems. Your phone is the one that actually does the roaming off its own protocol. But when its switching between 2 systems with different roaming protocols/settings, it isn't nearly as efficient as its picking up different signals. Sometimes it might work fine, others it can be horrendous and need the wifi on/off method to get it to switch.
You're welcome to not believe me.

I tend to agree with plemans. Mixing AP types will cause anomalies similar to what you're seeing. Does this issue occur with different brands/OS, e.g. Apple, Android? Try giving your phones an IP address reservation on your WiFi. Also, if on Apple iOS, turn off the private IP address mode. Good Luck!

Re: RBK752 : smartphone will try to reconnect endlessly when moving around the house
Thank you both for your answers. In the end, I will have to remove my IPS access points and add some more orbi.
But it is kind of stupid as there, I have ethernet cables directly from my router. So I will lose all this, or instead of Orbi sattelites could I add 2 additional routers working in AP mode ? (maybe cheaper version, like the RBK350)
Or will this again screw everything up ?

orbi satellites can be hardwired in.
You can always go with your ISP's gateway and directly to the orbi router, then hardwire in the satellites. Thats how i run mine.

Or you could just use the current ap's and have them with a separate ssid (and on a different wifi channel) and when your in their area, roam to them manually. A little more work but it only really impacts the devices that roam around. I usually go with a flagship router for devices close to my primary router and then a mesh for the devices at the peripheral.

I was more thinking opf removing one Access point and replace it by the RBK350 router for example. That way, the ethernet cable going out of my ISP router will pllug in the new orbi 350 router. This new router will be set as AP obviously. This should work or is it preferable not to do so, and instead remove the ethernet cable and use a orbi satellite ?

As @plemans explained, the fundamental issue is that every WiFi system is independent, no matter what 'mode' it is in. Even if the WiFi SSID/password is identical on the systems, they do not communicate with each other. It is up to each device to determine when it will switch from one access point to another. There are internet standards (I believe 802.11r) that specify how devices roam within one system, but they do not apply to roaming between separate WiFi systems.
Adding yet another WiFi system will make three separate WiFi networks in the house:
- ISP WiFi
- Orbi RBR752
- Orbi 350
The "best" solution in terms of devices roaming around the house is to have only one WiFi system,
