Can't connect to internet perhaps because 0.0.0.0 doesn't seem like the right IP Addr

I'm stuck.  Config on the Orbi got blown away so I reset back to factory settings, but I cannot connect to the internet.  As seen in the attached pic the INTERNET PORT IP Address shows as 0.0.0.0.  That doesn't seem right, but I'm not finding where in the gui to change that to (I assume???) the ip of the router.  Help...

I would power OFF the ISP modem for 1 minute. Factory reset the Orbi router and power it off. Power ON the ISP modem and let it sync. Then power ON the Orbi router and walk thru the setup wizard again using a wired PC and a web browser.
Press the back reset button for 15 seconds then release.

PLEASE DO NOT POST MAC Addresses in public forums. 

 

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

 

Has a power off for 1 minute then back ON with the ISP modem and Orbi system been performed since last update?

   Not a model number.  Look for "Model" on the product label.  Firmware
version?  Connected to what?

   So, it's not connected to your (unspecified) ISP.  To what _is_ it
connected?

 

   Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual (at least).  Read.  Beyond the
basic set-up instructions, look for the LED descriptions and
"Troubleshoot".  Indicators on any (unspecified) modem might be
interesting, too.

Correct. This is not right.  This Orbi is set to ask the ISP for an IP address using the DHCP protocol and has not received one.  This is not something the user keys in unless he has paid for a static IP.

Need to check the status of the ISP modem.

Can you connect a computer (PC, Mac, laptop) directly to the modem and verify that it is working correctly?

(We are assuming that this ISP does not require you to enter a user name and password to get connected, which would be a PPPoE setup rather than DHCP.)

Thanks to all for reading.  Powering off the cable modem and Obri router for 1 min got things quite a bit further.  Thanks!  At least Orbi thinks I'm connected to the internet and I was able to connect and use things as usual... for about 5 or 7 mins.  Then things slowed down and stopped.  Orbilogin still shows Internet Status "GOOD", but trying to bring up a webpage stalls with cannot connect to internet.  ???   Strange that things worked for a bit and then stopped.

   You know that how, exactly?  Point a web browser at "192.168.100.1",
and see what it says for itself?  How did you determine that the problem
is with the router, and not with the modem?

 

   What's the WAN/Internet IP address of the RBR40?  On its management
web site: ADVANCED > ADVANCED Home : Internet Port : Internet IP Address

It is maddening when companies remove the product label from devices.  There are generally clues to help decipher the ISP device:

  • If the modem has only one ethernet port on the back, it is almost certainly "only a modem" which has only one mode (what we call "bridge" or "passthrough").
  • If the modem has four ethernet ports on the back, it  is almost certainly a combination modem/router (and maybe even also WiFi).
    That makes discovering the mode more difficult.  Basically the key is to look at the Orbi public IP address.
    If the address is in one of the private IP spaces, the modem is almost certainly in router mode.

    If the Orbi's IP address is not a private IP address, then the modem has passed the assigned public IP address on to the Orbi.

   No, the key is to look at the Orbi _WAN/Internet_ IP address, and
_determine_ whether or not it's a "public IP address".  Which can be
done by plugging it into the form at: https://whois.arin.net/

   ... then the "modem" really "is in bridge mode".  If it's a private
address, then the "modem" is still a modem+router (not in "bridge"
mode.)

Your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.

Xfinity has an app that is used for configing the cable modem.  Upon using it I'm told, essentially, you can't do anything because your modem is in bridge mode. 

 

Re 192.168.100.1, I have my addresses starting with 10.0.x.x.  I have a lot of nailed IPs for cameras, but my router config backup from Feb has saved me from redoing all that.

Please don't post the WAN ip address in public forums. Considered a security risk. 

 

Is that Internet IP address seen on the RBR internet status page on the RBR? Or elsewhere?

The IP addr was the value found at ADVANCED > ADVANCED Home : Internet Port : Internet IP Address

Re the double NAT, this setup (Xfinity modem in bridge mode and Orbi doing routing) worked fine for 3 or so months.  Not sure why this began...  Given the direction given in msg 7 (factory reset again and reconfig) , do the msg 12 comments impact that?  Or obviate that?

The discussion sort of got stuck on the IP address, which has been established to be a public IP address, so the Xfinity box is in bridge mode.

 

Does the problem mentioned above still persist?

For all devices connected to the Orbi, or just some?

Yes, the problem persists.  Re all devices or just some, the local IP surveillance cameras seem to be ok.

Local net items are accessible, NAS backup storage, TiVo ip addr, Phillips LED lights, Pi-hole DNS sink on Raspberrypi (not using right now as a DNS server).

There is a tiny hole with "Reset" next to it.  Unbend a paperclip and stick one end into the hole until you feel a "click".  I do not know why it is called a "button" when it is obviously a "hole."

 

(Actually, Yes I know there is a tiny button inside the hole, but it still seems strange.)

   Not to everyone.  Do you press on "the hole", or on the button behind
the hole in the panel?  What "seems strange" to me is that this would
seem strange to anyone.
