Hardwired Satellite

Since my last discussion, I have gotten rid of my Verizon Fios Quantum modem/router and running the Fios internet line directly into my RBR50 Orbi Router. I only have internet service. No telephone or cable TV. I also have a RBS40V that I have hardwired to the router via Cat5. The RBR50 is on firmware V2.7.3.22. The RBS40V is on firmware V2.6.2.4. As far as I know these are the latest firmware versions available.

The RBR50 is on the second floor and the RBS40V is on the first floor setting right next to my TV. The Cat5 runs directly into the RBS40V. From the RBS40V I have a Netgear 4 port switch/hub that provides access to an Amazon FireCube and to a Marantz amplifer by two separate lines.

Everything has been operating well until recently. The RBS40V goes offline with the red LED circle of light glowing on the top. When I look at the network map it shows the status as green. Even when red the TV and amplifier still work. Right now I have the RBS40V hardwired and setting on the desk near the RBR50 and rebooted the system.  3 questions: 1) is the proximity next to the TV and FireCube causing interference and 2) should the ethernet wire from the RBR50 go to the switch first then to the TV, FireCube and RBS40V 3) does it matter that the LED is glowing red as long as the network map shows it being connected?

The RBR50 is on the second floor and the RBS40V is on the first floor setting right next to my TV. The Cat5 runs directly into the RBS40V. CAT5 doesn't handle 1000Mpbs connetion rates. CAT6 LAN cabling is recommended.  From the RBS40V I have a Netgear 4 port switch/hub that provides access to an Amazon FireCube and to a Marantz amplifer by two separate lines.

I recommend 3-6 feet in between devices. and 2) should the ethernet wire from the RBR50 go to the switch first then to the TV, FireCube and RBS40V Something to try.  3) does it matter that the LED is glowing red as long as the network map shows it being connected? If the system is working, could be a false inidication though you may look at the user manual to see what the inidiation means.

Re: Hardwired Satellite

  • Thank for your response. As I was researching the links in your reply, I came across another cause to the RBS40V glowing magenta (red) and staying solid red. I thought it was because the RBS40V was losing connectivity with the prime Orbi router (RBR50) even though it was hardwired to the main router. It made no sense to me that a hardwired satellite would lose connectivity. As I continued my research I came across the real problem. The reason the RBS40V was magenta was due to unheard/unlisten to Alexa notifications. I never use the Alexa to play music or answer questions, so I had no idea. As I looked into the process for Alexa setup on the RBS40V I ended up asking Alexa to "play all notifications". It made noise like a radio off station for a couple of seconds then the magenta light went off. Its been fine ever sense.
