Help this mom! And my 15 year old son :)

Hi,

My son wants to play Xbox and PS4 in his bedroom (multiplayer game with his friends playing online at their home).  We have Verizon Fios Router- Gateway G-1100 on the main level of our house. He was playing it in the basement on our Nighthawk router we have in the basement.  We have a spliter cord going from the Verizon G-1100 to the basement for the Nighthawk due to concrete we needed this. It works great in the basement.

The signal wasn't good in his 2nd floor bedroom and he couldn't use the games in there so we purchased Netgear Orbi Triband Mesh with 2.2Gbps (RBK23)  (Not the one in the heading- it wouldn't let me select RBK23- we purchased this through Amazon)

We got great signals on all Orbi's after setting up and testing.  Xbox is working in his bedroom now.   But PS4 will not work on Orbi no matter what I do.  He's getting an error code when he tries to connect PS4 to orbi CE-33991-5.

Some thoughts- PS4 will work with nighthawk router.   So why not Orbi?  Xbox is working with Orbi (We set up the Xbox first).

We have the G-1100 (verizon does have a newer router now- Triband- does that matter).  WE have 75/75Mbps  speed.  They have 1Gigabit now offered for more $$ a month.

I welcome ALL thoughts b/c I've researched and I can't figure it out.  I'm just a mom- not a big techy!  Son knows more than I do haha! Thank you so so much!

Is the verizon router running in router mode? or passthrough/modem only mode?

the most frequent issue we see is double nat. Its where you have 2 routers running in router mode on 1 network.

easiest 2 options to fix?

1. put the verizon device in modem only mode. It disables its wifi and routing function and acts as only a modem.

or

2. Put the orbi in AP Mode. this disables the orbi's routing function. It leaves it able to still run wifi and ethernet devices but leaves the verizon device acting as the router.

@plemansis correct that gaming issues can often be traced to having "more than one router".  It sounds (to me) like right now there are three routers in the home:

  • The Verizon, which is connected to
  • A Netgear Nighthawk in the basement, and also connected to
  • An Orbi

If the Verizon is placed into "modem only" mode, then the Orbi needs to be connected to the Verizon and the Nighthawk to the Orbi.  It is not clear if the Verizon is providing any other services, such as television or phone.  The Verizon boxes are a frequent topic of discussion.  (I know absolutely nothing about Verizon equipment.)

The alternative is to leave both the Nighthawk and Orbi connected to the Verizon router and put both of them into "Access Point" (AP) mode. This is done from the Orbi web interface, the Advanced Tab, Advanced Settings.

Re: Help this mom! And my 15 year old son :)

What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected. https://kb.netgear.com/000036466/How-far-should-I-place-my-Orbi-satellite-from-my-Orbi-router

Try enabling Beamforming and MIMO(MIMO may or maynot be needed) and WMM. Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, Circle, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Set Short preamble instead of Long preamble modes. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

Wired connected game consoles is preferred...
