I tried to replace the Orbi RBR20, with the RBR50, but won't connect

I tried to replace the rbr 20 with the rbr 50, both are modem with 1 satellite and I'm using the 20 modem with its satellite and the 50 sateillite for a mesh system. I wanted to add the 50 modem to replace the 20 as its a stronger unit, but I've tried to replace, but it won't sync up. Any suggestions on how to do this easily? this is the setup now, RBR20 main, with RBR50 satellite, to RBR 20 satellite, I would like to do is RBR 50 modem to RBR50 satellite to RBR 20 satellite.

Thank You

Model: RBR20|Orbi AC2200 Tri-band WiFi Router, RBR50|Orbi AC3000 Tri-band WiFi Router

Re: I tried to replace the Orbi RBR20, with the RBR50, but won't connect

It would help to clarify some technical details:

  • Neither of the Orbi units is technically a "modem".  They must be connected to the internet service provider modem with an ethernet cable.
  • The Orbi base unit (the "router") is identified with an "R" in the product number.  i.e. RBR50 and RBR20.
Orbi satellites have an "S" in the product number.  RBS50 and RBS20.

If the current setup is RBR20->RBS50->RBS20, you can swap out the RBR20 for an RBR50.  The steps would be to

  • Connect the RBR50 to the ISP modem and verify that it has internet.
The Orbi web interface (http://orbilogin.net) should show no satellites.
(Use a web browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc. to connect and enter the administrative credentials.
The user name is always "admin" and the password is "password" when the Orbi is brand new, but is often changed to something less obvious.)
  • Do a Factory Reset on the RBS50 satellite https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMw4ePACgc4
  • Select the "Add Orbi Satellite" menu item (bottom of the menu) and follow the directions.
  • Do a Factory Reset on the RBS20 satellite.
  • Select the "Add Orbi Satellite" menu item again and add the second satellite.

It is also possible to sync "add on" satellites using the "sync" button on the back of the satellite and the back of the router, as explained on page 12 of the User Manual: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RBK50/Orbi_UM_EN.pdf
