My router is in a closet in the center of the house about 6' off the floor. It is about 20 feet from the head of the bed in the master bedroom. The satellite is at the other end of the house about 50 feet away. We frequently have connect and speed issues with our laptops and cell phones. I have tried twisting the router thinking that may change the coverage but that didn't help.
Is there such a thing as being too close?

I finally switched from the Orbi to an R8000. I use the Orbi in my pole barn. All my problems went away.

Yes. 30 feet is recommended in between them to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

If the router and satellite are "too close", their signals overlap too much. At 50ft, your router and satellite may be too far apart.
For devices, there is no such thing as "too close". (Well, maybe sitting on top of the router is bad. 3-5 ft. works great.)

I don't think the issues you're seeing are a result of being close to the Router. If you see frequent disconnections then you must have other issues.
Please provide more information about your setup so we might be able to help you.

Re: Is there such a thing as being too close to the router?
I have 2 satellites and router and all are connected via cat6. 2 story townhome
I’m trying to achieve best 5ghz coverage as possible
Router and 1 satellite are same floor with max distance
2nd is on fist floor almost directly below
I’m concerned each item is too close to each other

Re: Is there such a thing as being too close to the router?
Do these connection problems happen when a device 'moves' around the house?
On the Orbi web interface, the Advanced Tab->Advanced Setup->Wireless Settings, toward the bottom, are the three boxes checked
- Enable Beamforming
- Enable MU-MIMO
- Enable Fast Roaming

Is connecting satellites via Ethernet better than Wi-Fi? I would suspect so
........
Wired backhaul is -for sure- more robust than wireless, but you should get better backhaul throughput (up to 1.7 Gbps) on wireless if you have an RBK50.

Do you see throughput, roaming or wifi drop issues?
