Latency

My orbi setup has high latency making online gaming almost impossible. How do I lower latency? My computer shows my latency averaging 158ms.

What's the ping latency between client/Satellite/Orbi/ISP?

Re: Latency

What Firmware is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the NG router is connected too?

Are you wireless or wired when gaming?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected. https://kb.netgear.com/000036466/How-far-should-I-place-my-Orbi-satellite-from-my-Orbi-router

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Try enabling Beamforming and MIMO(MIMO may or maynot be needed) and WMM. Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, Circle, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

How would I find all of that?

Re: Latency

Firmware is V2.5.0.38. I use the Panoramic Gateway from Cox Communications. I have it in Bridge mode so that I don't get double nat. My house is 7000 square feet and I properly spread the routers apart. I have to play on wifi it's not my choice. Beamforming, Mu Mimo and WMM are enabled. I only have 2 neighbors next to my house. One is 20 feet away. Other is 60 feet away. And one in front is across the street.

Re: Latency

Fast roaming and Circle are off. Why would I turn off daisy chain since I have the router and 2 satellites? Also why would I disable Armor?

Re: Latency

Disabling some of these features is a troubleshooting step to see if anything changes for you. Armor and security features can slow down or cause latency.

You may want to update FW to v2.5.1.8 aswell.

I keep checking for firmware updates and it says no updates available.

Re: Latency

Haven't tested my latency yet but I disabled armor and my download speeds were way faster. Why would Armor affect speeds that much? Before I was getting roughly 54 mbps download and now my speed is 232mbps download.

What is Ipv6 and what does it do? Do you have it on?

Daisy Chain makes it possible for a satellite to connect to the router through another satellite, rather than directly.  If the satellites are physically located "around" the router, rather than one satellite being farther from the router in the same general direction as the first satellite, then Daisy Chain won't be used.  However, Daisy Chain causes the satellites to create another 5G WiFi channel for the Daisy Chain which is "wasted effort" if it isn't used.  Netgear ships Orbi's with Daisy Chain enabled so that customers can add another satellite and it will "just work" no matter how it is physically located.

So, if your two satellites need Daisy Chain, then you have to keep it on.  If they do not, there is no harm in turning it off.

Since this issue is a serious frustration, you might consider temporarily relocating the computer to where it can be plugged directly into the modem. (i.e. unplug the Orbi and plug in the computer).  This takes the Orbi completely out of the picture.  If the on-line game reports serious latency issues when the computer is plugged directly into the modem, then the Orbi is not the cause.

As you may have read, people have reported issues with firmware 2.5.0.38 that is installed on your Orbi, both in terms of features and performance.  Many users have reported manually "going back" to firmware 2.3.5.30 or manually installing 2.5.1.8.  A manual isnstall is probably less time and effort than hauling a computer across the house and back.

2.3.5.30 is available here: https://kb.netgear.com/000061080/RBR50-RBS50-Firmware-Version-2-3-5-30

2.5.1.8 is available here: https://kb.netgear.com/000061530/RBR50-RBS50-Firmware-Version-2-5-1-8

Re: Latency

I read something that a manual update should be done by ethernet and not wirelessly as it may corrupt the satellites and router. Is this true or am I good?

Re: Latency

We experienced members ("old farts") are really comfortable with an honest "hard wired" connection.  I see no reason why a firmware update cannot work over WiFi.  When the Orbi reboots, of course, the WiFi connection will drop.  If things go correctly, then the WiFi should come back, the computer should connect automatically, and the web page might even refresh. (hmmm, probably want you to log in again.)

Re: Latency

Do I have to unzip the files for it to work? And how do I get it to work do I just select the thing that says RBS50-V2.5.1.8.img or the RBS50_RBS50-V2.5.1.8_Release_Notes.html

Because if I upload just RBS50-V2.5.1.8.zip it doesn't work.

This is absolutely correct.  The files must be "extracted" (I call it "unzipped") first.

So once I unzip it do I select the release notes file or the img file?

Re: Latency

When the Orbi asks you to browse to the file, it wants the. Img file.

Re: Latency

So i have two satellites and the router. I updated one satellite. And now the other satellite and the router both say they are on firmware v2.5.1.8 do I still need to do the update for the those two even though it's already on the latest firmware?

Re: Latency

Hey Furry could you explain your orbi setup to me I see you have RBK50 and XR450 (what is the XR450 never heard of it?) to a RBK852? How does that setup work and why so complex? Why did you choose that setup also?

Re: Latency

Thanks for helping me with the firmware. My download speeds got substantially faster after the firmware. Problem is my latency is still causing issues. I've turned off Armor, Circle, and Ipv6.

Re: Latency

Also I know it's not an issue with my xbox as I've power cycled it. All the ports xbox requires are setup. UPnP is on. Even soft reset the xbox. The xbox also receives 100% signal. My download and upload speeds far exceed what xbox live requires. And it's multiple games not being able to be played because of the Latency. Also xbox live services are up and running. This is so frustrating. Shouldn't only a very old router or a router with very old firmware have latency high enough to not play games.

Re: Latency

Were you able to connect the X-Box directly to the modem temporarily as a test?

I know this is going to sound crazy, but I purchased a LONG ethernet cable that reaches from my modem to the farthest room in my house.  I wait until the family is out of the house, and then string the cable wherever I want to test something.  That's how I verified ethernet backhaul works and tested latency on my setup comparing wired vs. WiFi backhaul.  I mention this because it just occured to me that the X-Box requires a television set (duh!)  Relocating an X-Box is trivia, but moving a TV set may not be possible!
