Sorry, not a valid excuse. Sure security fixes matter, but present them to me and let me schedule the update on my own time. I don’t think it’s unreasonable expectation.

Cheers.

Security updates are important, but I think they should be separated from bug fixes/enhancements/general updates whenever possible. Perhaps critical security updates should be deemed as being "required" and applied automatically (assuming they have been tested thoroughly beforehand), and other fixes/updates should be optional in terms of when they are installed. That is generally how it was done when I managed patching for a company I worked for before I retired. Due to corporate auditing requirements, we were forced to apply critical security updates on at least a monthly basis (sometimes more frequently if some updates were deemed important enough). But, we were allowed to update non-security-related patches on a more as-needed basis. Anyway, the various Netgear wireless routers are primarily for the non-enterprise home market, so providing more granular control over management of updates is probably not something they will do.

The MAC address that is denied is the satellite address not a MAC address of something trying to connect to WiFi. The particular satellite in question always appears to be connected.

I would turn off all wireless devices, then clear the logs on the RBR. Then turn on 1 by 1 yoru wireless devices and see if the logs pick up anything...

You might manually re-load v44, factory reset, then setup again...

The one thing that strikes me about this response is the lack of confidence in the Orbi product.

Even with the recent firmware hiccups I've seen, Orbi in router mode still comes out way ahead of the ISPs router in terms of stability.

Yes, you are right. I lack confident in all routers, not just Orbi.  It's also the reason I have 3 R7900P from Costco standing by in case the existing/Orbi routers HW fail. If you rely on Internet for your business/work/homeworks/etc., you don't want to have a single point of failure. It's always better to have a backup to failover to, including the standalone cable modem itself. The one thing that I could not protect my network from is power outage. 🙂

Re: New Orbi RBR50/RBS50 Firmware Version 2.3.1.44

so i am having the same issue and some of you guys. Recently purchased a refurb RBK50 unit with a satellite. At the initial setup, everything works fine, i see the satellite online and all the devices connected to it. Then when i log into the app again the next day or so the satellite shows offline. I logged into the orbi web portal and it does show that the satellite is online and even shows the devices connected to it.

Functionality wise, i can confirm that the wired devices connected to the satellite work without any issues. I also see the wireless devices connected to the satellite on the website but on the app i see them connected to the main router.

So what's going on? Should i just leave it be or get another unit? Can this issue be fixed? I am trying to figue out what my optimum (service provider) modem address is. I don't think i have access to that....anyone with Optimum online experience please chime in.

Thanks !

What Firmware is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the NG router is connected too?

Is the Orbi system operating in Router or AP mode?

Logging to the mobile Orbi app or the Orbis web page with a browser?

Try disabling the following and see:

both devices show version 2.3.1.44 on the app.

modem is Arris TM822

Orbi is in router mode. I tried the AP mode before and all hell broke loose. I finally had to reconnect my old router to get internet access and then redid the Orbi setup.

Im loggin into both the app and website. Website shows online with connected devices. App shows offline.

Ok, your ISP modem is only a modem so no built in wifi and router here. Thus the Orbi needs to be in router mode when connected to the ISP Modem.

Ensure your app is up to date as well.

Might post about this in the Orbi app forum:

Re: New Orbi RBR50/RBS50 Firmware Version 2.3.1.44

I had purchsed my RBK-53 from Costco last month. It was on firmware version 1.4.0.18, and would never find new updates. I had not disabled auto-updates. I began checking into updates, and found a recommendation to go to 2.0.0.74, then follow Netgear's release notes to update to 2.2.1.212 prior to the latest 2.3.1.32 or .44 updates.

I updated the satellites, then the router to 2.0.0.74. The administration page showed a small banner that a new firmware was available. I didn't think at the time to disconnect from the Internet, though I'd already downloaded all the necessary firmware packages. I then began the install on one satellite to 2.2.1.212. However, after the update on that first satellite completed, I was not able to reach the router or either satellite for a few minutes. When it finally came back online, the router and both satellites displayed 2.3.1.44.

So far, everything seems stable despite the router not following Netgear's own "required" step of going to 2.2.1.212 before the current version. I'll have to monitor and see what changes.

Re: New Orbi RBR50/RBS50 Firmware Version 2.3.1.44

@KingJamesKing

If you are running out of option, go to the Satellite telnet terminal, type:

        1. config default

        2. config commit

        3. reboot

After the Satellite comes back online and establishes "Good" backhaul connection, check the logs again.  If you see the same error messages, then try generating a new "Backhaul Password" and see if that helps.

Good luck!

The requirement to upgrade to version 212 first was directed at users who wanted to manually update Orbi firmware.  When Netgear performs firmware upgrades themselves, we have no idea how many "steps" they went through.  All we see is that a while ago the Orbi was on one firmware and now it is on a newer one.  How they got there is invisible to us.

Re: New Orbi RBR50/RBS50 Firmware Version 2.3.1.44

After v74 was applied to the RBS and then RBR, you can directly update the RBS to v44. Not need to load an intermediate version. v212 will be needed to go from v74 to v44 on the RBR however.

@FURRYe38 - I had been intending on manually updating, but both RBR and RBS auto updated on their own past .212. Do I need to downgrade the router back to .212, then upgrade to .44 again, or do you think it'll be okay since it was an auto update?

No, once the RBR is on v212 or v44 no need to downgrade.

Try the manual v44 FW re-load on both, after each has been re-loaded, factory reset the system then walk thru the setup wizard...

Finally took the plunge to .44. I had to factory reset the RBR50 and both RBW30's. However, it took several attempts of resetting one of the RBW30 to finally get it back in the fold. A couple of times it would connect to the RBR50 on 5G, but not allow devices to connect to the Internet. Right now it appears stable using only a single SSID.
