Ok, that's a downer 😞 Do you know if there is a way to force change the settings without a reboot? Then at least I can test.

Could the Voxel firmware be an option here? Or does that use/have the same read-only memory?

Alas, this topic exceeds my limited skill set.  My first impression is that a reboot will always cause the operating system to reload and any parameter changes will be lost.  My guess is that changing all those settings would allow a test, but would disappear on reboot.

Voxel's firmware behaves exactly the same way as stock Netgear firmware.  The difference is that Voxel has recompiled all of the source code (that is available) and updated all of the open source modules to the latest versions.  He then builds a firmware image which includes the new stuff plus the Netgear binaries that he does not have source code for.

As an example,Voxel prevents Netgear from 'updating' his firmware with newer Netgear firmware by changing a root text file firmware_version to be a number greater than anything Netgear will create by adding a "9." to the front of the version number.  Since Netgear is now only up to V2.7.4.24, the Orbi product will be long gone before they ever reach v9.<anything>.  This changed file is in the image that gets restored every time the router boots.

I love my Orbi.

Re: ORBI RBK50/RBS50 Tips, Tricks, Hidden Secrets, etc.,

Hi
You said “ I started poking around the rbr50 using telnet ”. Does this mean you are still using the older RBK50 firmware that supported Telnet?, or is there a new trick that can be used on the RBR50 to enable Telnet?

Cheers

Re: ORBI RBK50/RBS50 Tips, Tricks, Hidden Secrets, etc.,

There is a Python script on the internet that enabled telnet on the older Orbi products:

https://github.com/bkerler/netgear_telnet

Figuring out how to use Python on Windows was an adventure (for me).  Any time the router reboots, the Python script has to be run again to  enable telnet.

I love my Orbi.

It's actually a lot easier now. Just install python, download the package from github and run the python script from the package in powershell (Google 'run python in powershell')
