ORbi RBK53 Dropouts & Logs

So, unfortunately I paid a lot of money for this rbk53 system. It worked great for about 2 weeks and then nothing but dropouts and resets later I would really like a solution.

I am using virgin media 350mb service. I use their own supplied modem/router. The Orbi router is less than 1 meter from the Virgin setup and I have the other 2 satellites around my home.

Network map looks ok on the app. Most of the time they are all green, sometimes yellow sometimes red, its pot luck.

I'm no tecchy, so I really need to know where to find the logs for the orbi system so I know what is at fault, the orbi or my internet connection.

I have all firmware up to date. Any advice is welcome

Re: ORbi RBK53 Dropouts & Logs

If your ISP modem already has a built in router, then this could be a problem. This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

30 feet is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected. https://kb.netgear.com/000036466/How-far-should-I-place-my-Orbi-satellite-from-my-Orbi-router

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Try enabling Beamforming and MIMO(MIMO may or maynot be needed) and WMM. Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, Circle, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Set Short preamble instead of Long preamble modes. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

Netgear provides 90 days of "complimentary support" with the purchase of an Orbi system.  There is a link on the product registration page to "Contact Support".  Since you paid for it, that is one possibility to consider.

Orbi "logs" are not part of the Orbi "app" interface.  There is a debug facility on the Orbi web interface which produces tons of information.  Whether any of the data is relevant to your situation is a question better addressed by Netgear support.  I just produced a debug file from my Orbi while researching a different issue, and the quantity of data is overwhelming.

Re: ORbi RBK53 Dropouts & Logs

ive now got my home hub 3 router now set as a modem and the orbi as router. it too many many attempts from the oribi to see the internet, and eventually it worked, took about 20 retrys. I knew I had it setup correctly. So it eventually connected.

I'll see how this goes for a while and monitor

I do have an r7800 x4s but I dont want to use the orbi as an AP but then again the qos is good, I dont think the orbi uses it but I'll see how it goes with throttling before i make anymore changes

Re: ORbi RBK53 Dropouts & Logs

Sometimes you have to turn OFF the modem and RBR for 30 seconds then back on with the modem first, then the RBR lastly.

Glad you got it going finally. Let it run for a while and see. You should be ok.

Re: ORbi RBK53 Dropouts & Logs

i cant work like this, I think I'll have to go back to continual disconnects.

I plug up my homeplugs to the orbi and it doesnt even recognise any of them even connected. I connect sky cable, and it says sky wired. I connect homeplug and nothing.

What are NG thinking making pish like this ?

So try the modem in router mode and set the Orbi for AP mode and see how it goes.

Re: ORbi RBK53 Dropouts & Logs

So, im back to plain old drop outs again.

That was a full 12 hrs I suffered with this yesterday. Finished at 4am as both myself and partner are working from home we need a network connection. Took about 3 hrs for it to go back to normal, the orbi wouldnt connect, eventually it did. I'm scared if it ever has to have a reboot. Surely I can have this trouble from other 'Mesh' systems for half the cost. ?

My ISP router always had its wifi turned off, both 2.4 and 5g. There's no interference.

I'm going to stick with this for now, once things are less busy here I'll send this crap back to amazon and get something just as crap and save money.

I do appreciate the help though, thanks for that.

Re: ORbi RBK53 Dropouts & Logs

Disable daylight saving in settings and there will be no more dropouts.

Re: ORbi RBK53 Dropouts & Logs

Hmmm haven't seen this with mine. Daylight savings is enabled. Could be something else...that is effecting DST...

Re: ORbi RBK53 Dropouts & Logs

I just checked my settings and the Netgear had the wrong time for my location.

Literally, Netgear don't know what time it is 🙂

I am too much of a realist to suppose that setting the right time will fix all my problems, but alas one can dream.

Re: ORbi RBK53 Dropouts & Logs

Is DST enabled on the RBR? Time zone set correctly?

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
