Orbi Backhaul Ethernet Switch

Currently when I connect the RBS50 satelites via ethernet to a switch that has other devises, my network goes crazy. I loose Wifi on some devises and others I lose internet connection (but maintain local network conection).

I use an unmanaged Netgear switch but have other devises on the same switch. Do the staelites need their own switch? Or can other devises be on the switch too?

Thankyou,

Jamie

Re: Orbi Backhaul Ethernet Switch

Other devices can be on the switch. I've got quite a few on mine.

What modem/gateway do you have?

What firmware is on the orbi?

what other devices are connected to the switch?

What actual switch is it?

How is your network wired up?

for example see my signature.

Re: Orbi Backhaul Ethernet Switch

How do you have the RBS and switch connected to the RBR?

How long after you connect the RBS to the switch are you waiting for the RBS to sync fully?

Is "currently" significant?  i.e. was this configuration working before?

Yes, other devices can be on the same switch as the satellite.

Is it correct to assume that the swtich comes after the Orbi, i.e.::

Internet modem port connected to WAN (yellow) port on Orbi.

Orbi LAN port connected to switch.

Satellite and other devices connected to switch.

Re: Orbi Backhaul Ethernet Switch

If your vonage devices aren't connected, do you have issues with other devices connected?

I've seen where some VOIP phone setups host their own dhcp server and it can cause issues.

Re: Orbi Backhaul Ethernet Switch

I beleive everything was fully synced since I got a solid blue light for a while and it remained wired up for at least 30 minuets before I had to go back to wireless backhaul.

One of the RBS50's is still on v2.0.0.74 and syas "update failed". All the other RBS50's are on v2.7.2.104.

I have an RBS40 thats on V2.6.2.104 but it says "No new firmware available".

Is it ok for the one RBS50 to be on different firmware?

And the RBS40 only goes up to V2.6.2.104?

Should they all revert to a known good working firmware?

I'm going to try it without the Vonage devices connected once the network isnt in use.

Thanks again,

Jamie

Re: Orbi Backhaul Ethernet Switch

NO, all RBS should be on same v104 FW.

40 series uses v2.6.x for it's model series while the 50 series is on v2.7.x. Though the recent version is v104 so this should be ok as v104 is most current for both series. You might turn this one OFF and just test the 50 series after you get the one RBS50 updated manually to v104.

Re: Orbi Backhaul Ethernet Switch

Manually updated the one RBS50 to v104 ut unaboe to test wired backhaul until the weekend when network use is minimal.

Is having mixed FW versions a known issue for wired backhaul?

When I downloaded 2.7.2.104 I saw that they are also offering 2.6.1.40 as a download option. Is that because there's a lot of people experiencing issues with v104?

Thanks again,

Jamie

I have never seen an explanation from Netgear for there being two firmware versions for the Orbi.  At one time, there were separate versions clearly labeled for US and "world", hinting that some feature was available in one part of the world and not in the other.  This started last summer (2020) about when Netgear began promoting their "Netgear Parental Controls" to replace Disney Circle.

Netgear provides almost zero practical information to customers. (opinion)
