Additional test:

For this test the RBR50 has been set into router mode. No activation of Circle or Armor.

The temporary setup is Fiber (1000Mb/1000Mb)>Fritzbox 5490 (router mode, no WiFI)>RBK53 (ROUTER mode, daisy off, v2.3.5.30, wireless backhaul).

As before the tests are done at a "quiet moment" nothing turned off or disconnected except for the testing PC. So the results are an indication not an absolute number. And with double NAT (Fritzbox and Orbi are in different subnets).

Re: Orbi RBR50 is not supporting 900Mb+- on the WAN to LAN test

Can you configure the Fritzbox for bridge mode or if not, use the DMZ on the Fritzbox?

Test is in a double NAT condition. Not ideal.

Glad your seeing closer to 900Mbps.

Re: Orbi RBR50 is not supporting 900Mb+- on the WAN to LAN test

Ok, so after loading v38 on my RBR50 from last week no big issues there. Today I wanted to re-test for WAN to LAN speeds with v38 loaded.

Though better results from my initial test from prior FW version, still not seeing anything near 900Mbps after a factory reset and simple setup:

BPS=499,384,824
0: 62,220,337 (497,762,696 bps)
1: 64,979,116 (519,832,928 bps)
2: 64,417,581 (515,340,648 bps)
3: 63,067,730 (504,541,840 bps)
4: 65,513,878 (524,111,024 bps)
5: 60,189,054 (481,512,432 bps)
6: 62,540,081 (500,320,648 bps)
7: 65,600,714 (524,805,712 bps)
8: 64,502,549 (516,020,392 bps)
9: 62,906,779 (503,254,232 bps)
10: 57,804,877 (462,439,016 bps)
11: 54,562,161 (436,497,288 bps)
12: 62,602,220 (500,817,760 bps)
13: 63,736,316 (509,890,528 bps)
14: 64,919,285 (519,354,280 bps)
15: 58,105,313 (464,842,504 bps)
16: 58,896,232 (471,169,856 bps)
17: 64,852,544 (518,820,352 bps)
18: 62,907,253 (503,258,024 bps)
19: 63,936,806 (511,494,448 bps)

500Mbps seems to be the average for my unit. I presume this may still effect some others as well. Not sure what is the root cause. The RBR needs HW NAT accelleration to achieve the higher 900Mbps speeds.

My RBR850 sees 900Mbps using same test methods:

BPS=948,864,032
0: 118,388,264 (947,106,112 bps)
1: 118,656,612 (949,252,896 bps)
2: 118,645,652 (949,165,216 bps)
3: 118,493,080 (947,944,640 bps)
4: 118,640,768 (949,126,144 bps)
5: 118,648,578 (949,188,624 bps)
6: 118,499,186 (947,993,488 bps)
7: 118,612,055 (948,896,440 bps)
8: 118,591,977 (948,735,816 bps)
9: 118,662,758 (949,302,064 bps)
10: 118,484,783 (947,878,264 bps)
11: 118,628,460 (949,027,680 bps)
12: 118,661,544 (949,292,352 bps)
13: 118,497,743 (947,981,944 bps)
14: 118,655,652 (949,245,216 bps)
15: 118,612,888 (948,903,104 bps)
16: 118,644,823 (949,158,584 bps)
17: 118,634,157 (949,073,256 bps)
18: 118,630,705 (949,045,640 bps)
19: 118,642,596 (949,140,768 bps)

Re: Orbi RBR50 is not supporting 900Mb+- on the WAN to LAN test

I have the same problem: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi/Lower-speed-than-contracted-from-the-router-to-the-computer/m-...

I think the problem is that the QoS is enabled by default and cannot be disabled.

It's embarrassing that a product like this has this flaw. Smiley Mad

Re: Orbi RBR50 is not supporting 900Mb+- on the WAN to LAN test

Interesting assumption. Hadn't thought about that. I know from other NG routers I test, I see near 900Mbps on them. The RBR50 seems to be the only one that doesn't. Even after a factory reset I can't get it to 900Mpbs.

Re: Orbi RBR50 is not supporting 900Mb+- on the WAN to LAN test

I assume it is the QoS of the router because the speed tests always approach 50% of the speed detected by the RBR50 in its Speed Test (in router webUI > Advanced > Setup > Speed Test). I attach a screenshot.

Whether I test it from my computer connected by LAN cable to RBR50 or from my devices connected by wifi.

On the other hand a search for RBR50 + QoS on Google shows many results about this.

Re: Orbi RBR50 is not supporting 900Mb+- on the WAN to LAN test

Ya we saw this before where users mentioned that if a factory reset was performed, and if QoS, Traffic Meter and Access Controls were not touched, Speeds would be near 900Mpbs. I don't touch these in my testng for this. I presume something has happened in FW that seems to suggest that QoS on the WAN to LAN side is slowing things down even after a factory reset.

I would make contact with NG support about this. I have mentioned this to forum moderators. Haven't hear back anything since my initial post about this. They said they would get engineering looking into this. The more nagging we do, maybe this will get fixed. Smiley Wink

Re: Orbi RBR50 is not supporting 900Mb+- on the WAN to LAN test

This morning I took advantage of the fact that all the devices were switched off or stand-by and repeated the speed tests at speedtest.net and fast.com (for Netflix). So there was no reason for Dynamic QoS to limit bandwidth.

The results are painful, again, considering that my Internet connection is 1000 Mbps symmetrical.

The speedtest in router detects: ~895 Mbps / ~795 Mbps

On the PC connected by cable to the main router

Speedtest.net: ~488 Mbps / ~452 Mbps

Fast.com: ~470 Mbps / ~430 Mbps

I also tested using wifi a mobile phone and a Smart TV (both connected in the 5 GHz band to the main router located in the same room) and the results are also bad.

Mobile

Speedtest.net: ~333 Mbps / ~287 Mbps

Fast.com: ~260 Mbps / ~240 Mbps

Smart TV

Speedtest.net: ~262 Mbps / ~182 Mbps

Fast.com: ~220 Mbps / ~180 Mbps

It is very sad that I have 1000 Mbps symmetrical, I bought a mesh wifi system of the Orbi price and that theoretically is one of the best and I find this.

And the worst thing is that Netgear is aware that this problem exists and I don't see that they are doing anything.

Re: Orbi RBR50 is not supporting 900Mb+- on the WAN to LAN test

THanks for your detailed information and test results. This is what i'm seeing as well. Something on the WAN to LAN is being limted. Either QoS is doing this or HW accelleration is not being fully engaged on the RBR.

Have you opened a support ticket here? Please do so as to let NG know about this. The more we make noise, hopefully NG will get it fixed.

As more than 90 days have passed since the purchase does not let me open a ticket for technical support. Smiley Mad (another reason to not buy a Netgear product again).

If they don't fix it before the end of this month I think I'll take advantage of Black Friday to buy a Zyxel Multi X (with almost the same hardware as the Orbi).

When you talk about hardware acceleration, what do you mean?

Hi,

Just to give this post also my attention.

Seems I'm having exactly the same issue. Did not noticed this before as I only had a 300mb line, but since I upgraded to 1gig line, i'm also having this issue that download spead through orbi is only about ~450mbps while getting ~970mbps when directly connected my PC to the ISP-modem.

Best regards,

Recently switched my Orbi setup from AP to Router Mode.  I also have Xfinity Gigabit plan.  A couple of quick speed tests from various sites show similar results, ~800Mbps-900Mbps over LAN client.  Not sure if it makes any difference, but I ticked "Disabled SIP ALG" and select "Open" instead of "Secured" NAT Filtering.  YMMV.

I gave this a try, factory reset and setup from scratch, disabled SIP ALG and selected OPEN For NAT filter. RBR50 still doesn't see much over 400Mbps. Tried two different PCs aswell. Maybe this might work for some.

Re: Orbi RBR50 is not supporting 900Mb+- on the WAN to LAN test

So I wanted to try something with my RBR50 and see if it would even see anything near 900Mbps WAN to LAN behind another RBR with actual live 1G ISP services that I just got activated Friday.

1Gb/50Mbps: CM1100>RBR850 router mode><DMZ for RBR50 router mode>Wired PC

And i'm seeing just over 700Mbps with Ooklas speed test app in Windows 10x64 on the RBR50 in router mode WAN to LAN:

RBR50BehindRBR850DMZNear900Mbps.png

Something I haven't seen with just the RBR50 between two Gb LAN PCs and a switch testing internal iPerf speed testing.

Makes me wonder if HW NAT accelleration or Cut-Through detection is not detecting correctly or operating correctly.

I've got to find time to put the RBR50 online behind the CM1100 directly and see what happens.

Re: Orbi RBR50 is not supporting 900Mb+- on the WAN to LAN test

Ok, so I connected my RBR50 to WAN port #2 on my CM1100 cable modem. RBR50 is on WAN port #1. 1Gb/50Mbps

RBR50 is seeing near 900Mbps with my wired PC speed testing thru the RBR50 using Ooklas installable speed test app in windows 10: Orbi FW v40

RBR50BehindCM1100Port#2.png

Makes me wonder if type of modem or something in the RBRs detection of modems on the WAN side and such could be playing a roll in this. If I take the RBR50 and test it alone with just two PCs and a Gb switch, the RBR50 won't see anything much over 400Mbps. Seems like the RBR50's detection on the WAN side maybe a factor here.

So for this test, the RBR50 connected to a CM1100 cable modem is seeing near 900Mbps.

Re: Orbi RBR50 is not supporting 900Mb+- on the WAN to LAN test

Netgear technical support opened an issue more than 1 month ago for this problem but they haven't solved anything yet, or at least they haven't contacted me again. So I have solved it in a different way.
I took advantage of the fact that the product was still under warranty to return it to the shop as defective and they gave me my money back. With that money, and taking advantage of Black Friday, I have bought another wifi mesh router (of another brand obviously) that works as it should and has more features.

Bye bye Netgear!

Congrat on your new mesh!

I also took advantage of Black Friday and got 2nd RBK53S from Costco for $300 bucks, which is more economical than a single outdoor Satellite RBS50Y.  I also looked at the new Google WiFi set, but it doesn't have any Ethernet port, which is a non-starter for me.

Can you share which mesh you opted to go with?
