Orbi RBR50 - router versus AP mode performance

Hi,

I have an Orbi rbrv2 mesh with 2 sattelites spread out over 2 floors. One of the satelites (RBS) is connected through RJ45 to a central switch and from here linked to the RBR again with RJ45 Cat 6 cabling.

the RBR is connected to a Fiber ISP router with 1gbps up/down.

All devices are running 2.7.3.22 firmware.

NOW logic would state that I should put the RBR in AP mode as I already have the ISP router. This is both to avoid a double NAT situation and should free up capacity/CPU cycles from not having to route traffic. However if I do this the internet download speeds DROPS by between 30-40% compared to if I have it in router mode.

I`ve tested it with different tools and methodologies and all results are the same that the RBR performs much better in router mode.

I can`t get my head around this, so I hope that someone in here can assist and explain why?

Re: Orbi RBR50 - router versus AP mode performance

It looks that the ISP router is limiting the speed, when Orbi is in AP mode.

Is it possible to set the ISP router in bridge mode / passthrough mode / DMZ forwarding and keep Orbi in Router Mode?

What ISP router model do you have?

The other question is how are you testing speeds?

Wired? Wireless?

What device?

What site/app are you testing with?

Have you tried other test servers?

Re: Orbi RBR50 - router versus AP mode performance

Fair point. I've of course tried to view the logs on the ISP router to look for collisions etc. but the device is very limited in the functionality.

It's an Icotera i4850 Ethernet Router and it doesn't have bridge mode (that I have access to). I've tried to disable all wifi capabilities on it, but it makes no difference to the Orbi performance. Also in AP mode all 3 Orbi devices get their own IP address from the ISP routers DHCP.
Currently I have the ISP router and the Orbi (in router mode) on a /24 network, however with the ISP on 192.168.0.x and the Orbi on 192.168.1.x
The Icotera is just dumb simple layer2 device, so I don't see logical reason why it should limit the Orbi - but I'm open for suggestions. If you know a hack to get root access to the ISP router I'm all ears!
I haven't done a thorough wireshark analysis, because in my opinion the problem points more towards an issue with the Orbi and there's a limit to how much time I want to spend on it.
Honestly the Orbi sucks big time when it comes to logging and really shows that it's first and foremost a device made for the private market.

I haven't opened a ticket at the ISP, as the problem is solved by changing the Orbi mode to router and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't do anything about it.

Re: Orbi RBR50 - router versus AP mode performance

tried wired/wireless on Windows/IOS/Android even LG platform. tested on different speed measurement sites, PC tools and apps. Even did a timethis ps script copying a large file to Azure.

My methodology is sound. The prblem is elsewhere

Re: Orbi RBR50 - router versus AP mode performance

According to the ISP router manual https://icotera.com/media/1457/i4850-datasheet-1_8.pdf it seems to have dmz function. Can you please give Orbi a static IP address from the ISP router and do dmz forwarding to this address in the Icotera.
Also disable dhcp function in the Icotera. This way you can have Orbi in Router mode.
