Orbi drops wireless when computer comes out of sleep
I've recently started having issues with my Orbi RBR50 and I'm at a loss at how to diagnose it.
Basically when my computer comes out of sleep, internet stops working until it corrects itself after 2-5 minutes. The router is not resetting or restarting, as 'uptime' doesn't start over.
The internet drop usually happens the first time in the morning the computer comes out of sleep, but it can happen randomly throughout the day even if the computer isn't coming out of sleeping.
Every single time, I can look in the logs and this particular computer issues a DHCP request right before the drop. Usually a couple of them.
This used to happen 1-2 times a week and I was living with it. But now it happens every day. The major change is kids are out of school and using networking more.
Has anyone else experienced this symptom and can point me to how to diagnose it? I don't know how to know if the DHCP or increased utilization is a cause, symptom or red herring.
Here's what I have:
- ORBI is in router mode connected to cable modem (I don't have access here).
- Firmware of both Router and Satellite is 2.7.2.104
- This was happening before the firmware update. I did a fresh factory reset after the new version, but it did not resolve
- both 2.4G and 5G bands are using the same SSID
- transmit power for both bands are at 50% power.
- Satellite sits ~40 feet from the router on the same level.
- Computer in question is ~3ft from the satellite.
- Daisy-chain is off, as is MU-MIMO, fast roaming, and 20/40 Co-existence
- the computer in question is reserved an IP.
- connection via ethernet cable to the satellite doesn't make a difference
- Circle was enabled, so I disabled it. No improvement.
Basically besides the drops being tied to this one computer issuing a DHCP request, I've been unable to dig further.

Re: Orbi drops wireless when computer comes out of sleep
What is the mfr and model# of the netowrk adapter with in the PC?
Ensure it's adapter drivers are up to date.
I would disable any power management on the adapter. Some about Allow Windows to mange power management on the adapter. Try to disable this and see.
Is this the only PC that this happens with?
Try a different PC?
Contact the Mfr of the PC or ethernet adapter for additional help and information regarding there product.

Which logs are showing the DHCP requests? (Orbi or computer?)
I had a similar issue with a Lenovo Windows 10 laptop that was connected to an Orbi router with ethernet. When I would open the lid, it would start up and display that "globe" icon indicating no internet, even though it was obviously connected. Using the Network Troubleshooter or disabling/enabling the network adapter worked immediately... as did a complete restart.
I captured the actual packets and discovered that the laptop was in a loop asking for DHCP, over and over again. Each time, the Orbi responded correctly with the DHCP Offer packet and the laptop ignored it completely and requested again... forever. A month later, the laptop is ethernet connected to a different Orbi and the problem has gone away. During that month, I've updated Windows software, messed around with configurations, etc. etc.
My take on this is a big "beats the heck out of me". What I was able to establish was that (in my case) it was not the Orbi. It was the laptop.

Thanks for the suggestions @FURRYe38 . The network adaptor is a Killer AX1650w and drivers are up-to-date, with no power management enabled.
I have about 3-4 other computers on the network that are all behaving. But when this particular computer comes up, all of the devices stop connecting to the internet. It's like the Orbi is stalled for a few minutes.
I tried telnet'ing into the Orbi and taking a packet capture, and there's nothing.
Right after posting the original message, I read about a potential issue with traffic meter and daylight savings time (https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi/Orbi-Dropping-Internet/m-p/2081787#M118823). It's a stretch that this is the problem, but the timing lines up to when things really got bad, so I disabled traffic meter.
And yet the same thing happened just now, so it didn't fix the issue for me.

Yeah, I suspect it's this particular laptop triggering something for sure. Just don't know how to even get started diagnosing what.
And the logs I was refering to was the Orbi logs.

That makes sense, Orbi offers and the laptop asks again, so the Orbi offers again.
Dumb old me, I would have thought Orbi would only log once the entire DHCP handshake was completed with the Accept.

As much as we gripe about Netgear offering only 90 days of 'complimentary support' with purchases, I have no idea how to get a response out of Microsoft about a problem. Maybe the PC vendor?
When I used the debug WAN/LAN Capture, I opened the lan.pcap file with Wireshark and set a Display Filter to dhcp.

Re: Orbi drops wireless when computer comes out of sleep
I have the exact same problem. I wake up in the morning, wake my PC, but it takes a few minutes for my PC to connect up to the internet. I just installed the Orbi system, my PC is hardwired.
A bit of annoyance, nice if there was a simple fix

Re: Orbi drops wireless when computer comes out of sleep
Be sure to disable any power management features that Windows has enabled on the ethernet adapter.
Be sure the ethernet adapter drivers are up to date.
Be sure your using good quality LAN cable. CAT6 is recommended.
What Firmware version is currently loaded?

My PC never goes to sleep. Laptop, yes, because I close the lid. Desktop never sleeps.

Re: Orbi drops wireless when computer comes out of sleep
Hi,
I have the exact same problem, it always take a few minutes for my laptop to get connected to internet.
However- I'm sure it's the router (RBR50) since this problem does not exist when I'm at another location (e.g my boyfriends house). I've tried with two different laptops (my own and a laptop from work (with a totally different configuration)) and it's the same = whenever the laptops are at my house and been in sleep mode, it takes 2-5 minutes before they can access internet after waking up. As stated, this does not happen anywhere else, and it wasn't like this before (on either laptop..). I can't rememeber when this started, maybe like a year ago or so?
And yes everything is up to date.

Re: Orbi drops wireless when computer comes out of sleep
Hello Sthlm,
I understand you are having connectivity issues with the RBR50.
Which Firmware version is your Orbi currently on?
I look forward to your response!
Best,
Kevin
