Orbi in AP Mode - many functions not working
I have my Orbi router setup in AP mode. I am running multiple Orbi satellites.
Since setting it up this way, I can:
- No longer use the Orbi app to manage the router and the network. I've read many postings that say "should work", but it doesn't. So I'm either missing something or it doesn't work.
- When I use the Web interface to manage firmware, it only allows me to update the main router node firmware and not the satellites. I have to update the satellite firmware by connecting directly to the satellite and manually updating.
While these are not show-stopper issues (in fact, I've been managing around it for 6 months now), it is REALLY annoying.
Can someone either point out what I need to do to make these features work, or at least confirm that they are not working for other folks as well?
Thanks.
Heath

Betreff: Orbi in AP Mode - many functions not working
In AP Mode, Orbi depends much on the routing capabilities of the main router (the ISP router). The issues you describe look like routing issues.
Does your router allow reserving DHCP addresses for the devices? If yes, I would reserve IP addresses in the ISP router -at least- for the Orbi Router and Satellites.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, the Orbi nodes are getting their IP addresses from the DHCP server in the ISP router. However, I see the Orbi main router does discover the addresses of the satellites and they show up properly in the devices list every time. I would have thought this would be resilient to any change in DHCP assignment.
Regardless, I'll give this a try and report back. Thank you for your assistance.

I want to reinforce the response from @FURRYe38 . When in AP mode, the Orbi is NOT a router. Not in any way. In addition to not assigning IP addresse via DHCP, an AP does not enable any sort of port management, route management, does not enable Disney Circle or any sort of firewall functions, etc. etc.. If the existing router is not letting you do things that you want to do, the solution is to have the existing device put into "passthrough" or "bridge" mode and put the Orbi into router mode. Only have one router.
