RBK 13 Wi-Fi is working but ethernet says there is no Internet
All of a sudden, my hardwired ethernet connection PC is not connecting to the Internet, but all of my Wi-Fi devices are. What is going on?

I don’t know how to check the firmware version, but like I said nothing has changed in months until this issue. Two days ago, I turned my computer on and there was no Internet icon in the system tray. When I tried to log into a website, it said there was no Internet and it has been downhill from there. I have tried rebooting the router, the modem, and the PC, running, diagnostics, etc., etc. etc. and nothing is working or helping.

Windows 10 includes a Network Troubleshooter. What does it report on the Ethernet interface?
Is there another device that can be connected to the RBK10 with an Ethernet cable?
(laptop, AppleTV, etc. Amazon sells Ethernet-USB adapters for under $10. I have enjoyed connecting smartphones, tablets, Chromebooks, and laptops which have no Ethernet port. - I have these adapters with both regular (USB-A) and with USB-C connectors.
- Oppie2112Oct 11, 2024AspirantI am getting two different error messages. Initially it was “ diagnostics policy service is not running“, and then it was “windows could not detect this network’s proxy settings“. I have also tried a USB ethernet adapter with the same result. I have also tried running direct from my modem instead of from my Netgear Orbi router, because my modem only has one ethernet port, and have the same issue. Do you think maybe I got a virus that screwed up things?

The "good news" is that the Orbi is not causing this problem because it occurs when connected directly to the ISP modem.
The problem is on the Windows 10 PC.
Since you have an Ethernet-USB adapter, have you tried connecting a different device to the Orbi port?
(tablet? laptop with no Ethernet cable? Chromebook?)
- Oppie2112Oct 11, 2024AspirantI have not, but what would that tell me since the issue occurs when not connected to the Orbi?
Do you think this could have been caused by a virus? - CrimpOnOct 11, 2024Guru - Experienced User
Guess the only value would be driving a "nail in the coffin" that it is the Windows 10 computer.
Another test would be to connect to a different Ethernet network, but computers are not portable (like laptops).
A virus might do "anything", but this seems more like something set wrong in the Windows 10 Network settings.
- Oppie2112Oct 11, 2024AspirantNow I am getting a message that I need to activate Windows and when I try to with the pre populated key it says it is invalid
- Oppie2112Oct 13, 2024AspirantLong story short, I did a reset which reloaded windows and resolve the issues of being able to get on the Internet. However, because I did the free Windows 10 upgrade from Windows 7 years ago my Windows product key is no longer valid. After contacting windows, they said I would have to purchase a new product key For $309 because they no longer support Windows 7!!! What a freaking joke! Any idea where I can get a Windows 10 Pro product key at a reasonable price? My computer unfortunately is unable to use Windows 11 because of its age.
