I have recommended Orbi to a friend, and I said mostly because of the availability of an outdoor unit. He is thinking getting the RBK40 (AC2200) system rather than the RBK50/3000. I said that's fine, since he is mostly concerned with internet (no real internal use, like a server, etc), and his internet isn't that fast. But, our question is if he gets the RBK40 system, and later decides he wants needs an outdoor unit, will the RBS50Y (i.e. the 50 outdoor unit) work with the 40 system? I don't see an outdoor unit for the 40 system.

yes it will.
It'll function at the slower backhaul speed of the 40 system (866mbps) versus the 50 (1733mbps) but it'll still work fine.
