RBR50 - no IPv6 after V2.5.1.8 update?

Just got my RBR50 over the weekend and so far am loving it! I saw a few posts about needing to force updates from v2.3.X to v2.5.1.8 which I did yesterday and so far so good except I can't seem to get IPv6 to work properly. I set it up when I set everything up on the first day and I think it was working as I manually set the DNS to use Cloudflare's for both IPv4 and IPv6 and I saw the IPv6 DNS servers listed on the status page (I didn't confirm with a check on the test page referenced below though). After the update I used Auto Detect and it set it to DHCP and shows a WAN IPv6 address but on the Xfinity IPv6 Test Page it doesn't show it as working. I also don't see any IPv6 DNS servers showing on the status page... Any ideas?

Actually, imbedding pictures seems to require moderator approval.  I have posted 100's of times and this often happens to me.  (sigh)

So tried a full master reset on both the router and satellite and turned everything back the way it was and then tried to setup IPv6 with the same result.

IPv6 Page (LAN and WAN IPv6s blurred but they're there and appear to be valid):

Mine looks exactly like this, except that I have the ISP DNS servers instead of specifying them.

Internet Port (IPv4 and MAC blurred), you can see the IPv4 DNS servers but not IPv6 (although I definitely saw those with the original FW):

Mine looks exactly the same, except it's my ISP DNS servers.  I do not think I have EVER seen IPv6 DNS values here.

Comcast IPv6 Check (IPv4 blurred):

It appears to me that this Orbi is supporting IPv6.  Looking through the message thread, I do not see some items:

  • What is the Orbi connected to (brand & model)?
    (Looking for modem, modem/router, modem/router/wifi)
  • What the ISP and are they on record as supporting IPv6.
(Mine is Spectrum and they have an extensive web page describing how they are)
On the off chance that the ISP is Xfinish (Comcast), I found their page: https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/about-ipv6
Of particular interest was this comment:
"You can view your current IPv4 address at http://www.comcast6.net. When your area transitions to IPv6, you’ll be able to see your IPv6 address there)."
  • Are there any other devices that can be used to test?
(In addition to my Windows PC, I have tested Raspberry Pi and Android Phone.  All pass.)

Re: RBR50 - no IPv6 after V2.5.1.8 update?

So IPv6 was working with prior version of FW and now its not?

What Mfr and model # is the ISP modem your using with the RBR?

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed with the RBR? I would also factory reset or power OFF the ISP modem for 30 seconds then back ON and let it sync, then after the reset, configure the RBR for IPv6 and test again.

I know there was a IPv6 problem a few revs back that I believe was fixed. Hope it wasn't broke again.

Re: RBR50 - no IPv6 after V2.5.1.8 update?

Can you please describe which IPv6 option used on the Orbi?

(Drop down menu has a bunch of choices.)

(As a true Luddite, I keep IPv6 disabled, but.....) as an experiment just now I selected a couple of choices (auto config, auto detect, DHCP) and noticed that I got different results each way, but that the Xfinity web site consistently says I have no IPv6.  I am on Spectrum, so maybe there is something "special" about Spectrum and setting up IPv6?

Re: RBR50 - no IPv6 after V2.5.1.8 update?

OMG.. What a dufus!  Of course the test failed.  My Windows machine had IPv6 disabled.  Geez.

Enabled IPv6 and "Voila", now the web test says I have IPv6.

The option I have now is "DHCP", although I have no idea if any other options work (or do not work).

AND... Having figured this out (for MY Orbi), do I "destroy the loom" (shut off IPv6 again) or leave it enabled.  Choices, choices...

Your using v30 FW or have you updated to v2.5.1.8?

Re: RBR50 - no IPv6 after V2.5.1.8 update?

To be honest, my Orbi is on Voxel V9.2.5.1.11SF-HW.  Doubt that has much to do with the internet IPv6 test site saying "no" when my Windows machine was not using IPv6 and "yes" as soon as I enabled it.  I do not recall Voxel mentioning changing IPv6 in his firmware (will read the release notes again).

Ok, ya his version is based off v2.5.1.8 with updated packages.

Something @MrChrisD could also try if he interested if his configuration or factory reset doesn't clear this problem:

Re: RBR50 - no IPv6 after V2.5.1.8 update?

I had intended to do a short test of Voxel's firmware and then return to stock Orbi firmware, but I haven't found any reason to go back.  My usage is not that great, so the additional efficiency from Voxel's optimizations are not significant.  This is sort of my basic rule, "if it isn't broken, don't fix it."

It appeared to be working (I was able to see the IPv6 DNS servers on the summary page but did not check that it was funcitoning per the test site I linked in my original post). Now I do see an IPv6 WAN address on the IPv6 page but do not see the IPv6 DNS servers on the summary page and the test site reports that I do not have an IPv6 IP.

Good call - will try that tonight or tomorrow to see if that worked. I did not do that after the latest FW update. Question - do I need to do this on the Satellite as well or does the reset on the base router also reset the Satellite?

I know there was a IPv6 problem a few revs back that I believe was fixed. Hope it wasn't broke again.

Agreed!

I couldn't remember what I used on my old router so I went with "Auto Detect" which chose "DHCP". I then found a post mentioning it should be DHCPv6 which I'm assuming Orbi's "DHCP" is referencing. When that didn't work I just directly selected DHCP. Same result - it shows an IPv6 WAN IP on the IPv6 page but no IPv6 DNS servers on the summary page and the test site doesn't see an IPv6 IP. This is same result with either the ISP or Cloudflare DNS servers selected.

You scared me for a minute but I did confirm IPv6 is on for my laptop wireless adapter and it does show an IPv6 local address so locally IPv6 appears to be working on the Orbi, just not over WAN.

Updated to v2.5.1.8. It had v2.3.x (forget which exactly) when I set it up and then "forced" the update by downloading the FW from Netgear and manually updating (it did not show an available update on the app or through the web setup page).

I am "way behind the curve" on this IPv6 business.  "Summary Page" refers to exactly which Orbi web interface page?

Now that I am "IPv6 capable":

  • My "Internet Setup" page shows only IPv4 DNS servers.
  • My "Advanced Setup", IPv6 page shows IPv6 DNS entries.
  • The test web site shows I have IPv6 as long as the computer I am testing from has IPv6 enabled.

The satellite should not matter as it's just passing thru however it would not hurt to ensure the entire system starts out with a clean slate.

Let us know how it goes.

Here was the one issue that one user helped to get fixed:

Sorry, I meant the "ADVANCED Home" page, specifically the Internet Port "tile". On the original FW it showed both IPv4 and IPv6 DNS servers (IIRC but definitely at least IPv6) but now only shows IPv4.

On the IPv6 page I see both a WAN and LAN IPv6 address as well as the Cloudflare DNS servers I manually set.

On the test website, however it does not detect an IPv6 IP (third step).

I still need to try a master reset and re-setup but probably won't happen until tomorrow.

I am still not "on the same page".  My Advanced Home Page, Internet Tile does not show ANY IPv6 information.  (attached)

But, the test-ipv6.com web site claims I have IPv6 (not only on my Windows 10, but also on a Raspberry Pi.)

I have noticed that once someone responds to a post on the forum, others tend not to step in, sort of like the matter has been "claimed".  If this is the case with this topic, then I apologize, because I am floundering around and not helping much.

I definitely have IPv6 enabled on my wifi adapter but just checked in the status and while it has a "Link-local IPv6 address" it doesn't have anything populated for "IPv6 Default Gateway" or "IPv6 DNS Server". Looks like it's a machine-specific issue I'll be looking into...

We're good here. After a restart my laptop started working fine for IPv6. I'm 95% sure I saw the IPv6 DNS servers refelcted on the summary page on the original 2.3.X FW but either way we're all good now. Sorry for the firedrill.

Re: RBR50 - no IPv6 after V2.5.1.8 update?

Your DNS entry is actually incorrect. 2606:4700:4700::1111 and 2606:4700:4700::1001 actually means 2606:4700:4700:0:0:0:0:1111 and 2606:4700:4700:0:0:0:1001 since the :: is shorthand for zeros. In IPv6 you are allowed one :: in a string for this shorthand. The :: can take the place of any number of zeros as long as you have a complete string
