RBR50 offline firmware update

I have Xfinity Modem/Router that I turn on Bridge mode and use RBR50 as router with two RBS50s as well.

Last night the internet went out. I tried power resetting and didn't work. one of the RBS50 had magenta ring, but rest had no color ring, but green power light on back. I am pretty sure firmware is still 2.6.1.40 and not 2.7.2.104.

I turned off Bridge mode on Xfinity modem/router and internet is up again, so I narrowed it to an Orbi issue. I tried downloading 2.7.2.104 on my computer and then ethernet cable to the RBR50 so manually update the firmware offline, but I can't figure out how to connect to it.

I tried the below instructions, but couldn't get past connecting device at Orbilogin.com

Re: RBR50 offline firmware update

First, I have serious doubts that Orbi firmware is the problem.  I would be more likely to do a Factory Reset on the existing firmware first.

If you are determined to perform a manual firmware load, I believe that ethenet connected devices  have a problem with the DNS-based connection method. (Essentially, the Orbi DNS process intercepts requests to resolve a bunch of internet names, including orbilogin.com, orbilogin.net, routerlogin.com {and several more that I cannot remember} and returns the IP address of the Orbi router.  For some reason, devices that are wired do not go through this process and thus the names are not resolved.)

Pointing the web browser at the actual IP address of the Orbi device will work.  When the Orbi is in router mode, it usually takes 192.168.1.1 for its LAN IP address.  So, point the browser to: http://192.168.1.1.

You can verify this by looking at the network settings on the PC to find the gateway IP address, which will be the Orbi router.

To update firmware on satellites, my preference is to connect directly to the satellite.  Look at the router's Attached Devices page to learn the IP address of each satellite and then connect to them by IP.  For example, if one satellite is 192.168.1.x, then air the browser at http://192.168.1.x.

Re: RBR50 offline firmware update

I tried following reset video, but the RBR50 power light never turns amber. I hold down the reset button for 30 seconds and still no amber color. I know I’m pressing it, because I hear the reset button click down.

I tried to connect directly, and go to the IP address and it says “this site can’t be reached.”

There is a process that people call the "30-30-30 method":

  • Hold the Reset button for 30 seconds (a very long time)
  • While holding the reset button, turn off the power and wait 30 more seconds.
  • While still holding the reset button, turn the power back on and hold for 30 more seconds.

If the IP address comes back as "site can't be reached", that is not a good sign.

I would take a look at the network settings to verify that

  • The PC got an IP address from the Orbi (what does it start with?)
  • The subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
  • There is a gateway address where the first three numbers match the PC's IP address

Re: RBR50 offline firmware update

I tried 30-30-30 and it didn’t change color from green, besides to off while it was unplugged.

I can’t find an IP for the RBR50. I have it plugged into my computer with Ethernet cable, I disconnected from my xfinity wifi, and I don’t see any connection.

Re: RBR50 offline firmware update

Try http://routerlogin.net/ instead of the IP.

Re: RBR50 offline firmware update

So if you disconnect the RBR from the ISP Modem and all other devices from the RBR accept for 1 wired PC, press the reset button in back for 15 seconds then release. Can the wired PC and any browser connect to the RBRs web page at 192.168.1.1 at all?

Re: RBR50 offline firmware update

The RBR doesn’t seem to respond to the reset button.

I tried as you said, and it isn’t connecting to the IP address.

Re: RBR50 offline firmware update

Try this:

https://kb.netgear.com/000059634/How-to-upload-firmware-to-a-NETGEAR-router-using-Windows-TFTP
Need to press the reset button for 30 seconds then release, then it send to PUT the command and upload the FW.

Try Windows built in TFTP program as well.

If this fails, I would presume the RBR is bad and needs to be replaced.
