RBR50 randomly reboots

My RBR50 Router, connected to my AT&T BGW210 (AT&T Fiber), has been randomly rebooting about twice a week.

Nothing in the logs.

No indication of anything from the BGW210 side.

We simply notice that we lost WiFi, and see the white pulsing LEDs on the RBR50 - it's rebooting.

Firmware is currently 2.7.3.22.

This obviously induces a major disruption in my work.

Thanks

Jim

Does the log contain an entry stating "Initialized"?

something like this: [Initialized, firmware version: V2.7.4.24] Monday, August 22, 2022 23:43:16

Re: RBR50 randomly reboots

And several "attack" messages in the log, which I assume (perhaps incorrectly) is typical...

Re: RBR50 randomly reboots

Well fudge.  This is not a common problem with the RBR50 model.  I can think of some obvious steps:

  • Guarantee that power is not being interrupted (even too briefly for people to notice) by powering the RBR50 with a small UPS.
  • Test that the power supply cord is not damaged by 'wiggling' the cord to see if that causes the router to reboot.
  • Update the firmware to the latest release: https://www.netgear.com/support/product/RBR50.aspx#download

My RBR50 routinely stays up for months at a time (until I deliberately mess with it or Edison cuts power for repairs).

I love my Orbi.

Your assumption is correct.

I have kept every log file for over three years, and every single day there are many (many) such log entries. My feeling is that this is a normal and unavoidable consequence of connecting to the internet.

For example, by having a telephone, I now get at least 20 calls every day wanting to "Press 1 to learn if my house qualifies for drought tolerant landscape, solar panels, double pane windows. Press 9 to be removed from the list."  By having a mailbox, I get catalogs and advertisements that I never asked for.  By connecting to the internet, I now have every pimply-faced teenager in the world wondering if there are any ports open on my router.

There is an option to turn off the feature of logging these (possible) attack scans.

I love my Orbi.

Re: RBR50 randomly reboots

Thanks. The RBR50 and BGW210 are both plugged into the same surge protector power strip, and the BGW210 is not reseting, so it seems unlikely it's the power source. I will check the power cord as you suggest.

I will also update to the latest firmware.

Appreciate your time. If I cannot resolve this, will pull the Orbi gear out and reset the BGW210 so it's my access point, pop in

a couple WiFi range extenders around the house, and see how that goes.

Best

Jim

Re: RBR50 randomly reboots

You might give Voxels 3rd party FW a try as well.

Re: RBR50 randomly reboots

Hello jimmauro,

Welcome to the NETGEAR Community!

I understand that you are having reboot issues with your RBR50 on firmware version 2.7.3.22.

Please update your RBR50 firmware to version 2.7.4.24 then check your RBR50 for reboots.

Please navigate to the link below for the most updated firmware for your RBR50:

Re: RBR50 randomly reboots

Thanks. I updated both my RBS50 Satellites and the RBR50 router with the latest firmware this morning.

As the reboots have been random, I need to wait at least 2 weeks before I start to feel warm and fuzzy that the issue is resolved.

I will post an update here either way.

Best

Jim

Re: RBR50 randomly reboots

Well, it was close, but no cigar.

I did the firmware update on 9/17. The router rebooted yesterday (9/29).

So there's still a problem with my RBR50 randomly rebooting. Here's the log entry:

[Initialized, firmware version: V2.7.4.24] Thursday, September 29, 2022 17:11:04

My next move is to remove the Orbi gear, re-enable WiFi on the AT&T BGW210 modem, and plug a couple WiFi

extenders in on the 2nd and 3rd floor.

Very disappointing. The Netgear Orbi devices are relatively expensive. I paid almost $400 for the router and

2 satellites just over a year ago.

Appreciate everyone's input.

Jim

Re: RBR50 randomly reboots

You might give Voxels 3rd party FW a try as well. If the reboot still happens even with this FW, then there is either a HW problem or a environment problem.

Good luck.

Re: RBR50 randomly reboots

Thanks. I may try that. I do not think it's environmental, as they AT&T BGW210 and the RBR50 are plugged into the same

surge protector, and the BGW210 is not restarting.

I just swapped the power supply between one of the satellites and the router. Will see what that does.

If I get another router reboot, I may try the 3rd party firmware - need to think about that, but I do appreciate the note.

Best

Jim
