Where are Parental Controls on the AX4200 Orbi

I finally ditched my problematic Nighthawk R7000 and bought an Orbi AX4200 mesh system. I have it up an running but can't find a way to enable Parental Controls.

Re: Where are Parental Controls on the AX4200 Orbi

Hello North123,

Welcome to the Orbi Family! The RBK750 system currently does not support parental control features. However, we're working on getting parental control features to the RBK750 system soon! Stay tuned for further details!

Regards,

Christian

Re: Where are Parental Controls on the AX4200 Orbi

Netgear has set up a community forum specifically for the Circle product. Most of the people who watch that forum are more likely to have experience with Circle and know how to work it better than those of us who follow this "general Orbi" forum. Might be more likely to find someone who has a solution if the question is posted there:

Good Luck

First, AX4200 is not actually an Orbi model number.  My guess is that you have a package including the RBR750 router (printed on the product label on the bottom of the router).  This is just a guess, but I have the impression that this product does not include Parental Controls.  Neither the product data sheet:

https://www.netgear.com/images/datasheet/orbi/RBK752.pdf

not the User Manual make any mention of Parental Controls

https://www.netgear.com/images/datasheet/orbi/RBK752.pdf

Whereas the product data sheet for the Original Orbi router, clearly advertises Parental Controls:

https://www.netgear.com/images/datasheet/orbi/RBR50v2.pdf

I seem to recall this topic coming up from time-to-time and the answer being, "coming soon". (After years of coming soon, this begins to look more like the play Waiting for Godot.)  Forum members who participate in the Orbi AX forum may have personal experiences to relate:

Re: Where are Parental Controls on the AX4200 Orbi

Parental Controls is a lot like ... (pick a metaphor: war on drugs, winning in Afgahistan, losing weight...)

The enemy can be creative, determined, patient, and obstinant.

There are several options (none of which I have tried)

  • Purchase a Circle Home device: https://shop.meetcircle.com/products/circle-home-plus-parental-controls
Just as Netgear charges annually for Disney Circle on the router, Disney charges for the service when you get it directly from Disney.
  • OpenDNS.  OpenDNS has a free version and one intended to block adult content:
    https://www.opendns.com/home-internet-security/
  • Pi-hole DNS has extensive block lists. It requires a host, which can be in the Amazon cloud, as a virtual server in Windows, on a Linux box, or (what I have) on a Raspberry Pi.  (I installed it to see how it works and use it on MY laptop, not on family devices.)

No matter what strategy is adopted, it is essential to keep control of the actual computers/tablets/smartphones.  If the person to be protected has administrative rights to the device, they can pretty much evade any system that is set up.

If this is a critical need, this Orbi system will not fulfill it.
