Re: New - RBR750 / RBS750 Firmware Version 4.6.8.5 Released

Downgraded to v4.6.5.14, daisy chaining is now working as before at previous high speeds.

IMHO there is something wrong with the daisy chain logic in this latest firmware. Chose to downgrade to V4.6.5.14 instead of V4.6.8.2 because I didn't want to reset everything and start over, luckily the downgrade went without a hitch. Went in the reverse order when downgrading: satellites first, then the router.

Something is definitely wrong with this version. I get at least 100mbps less speeds than previous versions. May be the problem started in 4.6.8.2 I can't say.

4.6.8.5 continues to work very well for me with my RBK753 setup.  I am however also using the email logging setup as recommended.    Stability has been spot on for several weeks now.

Same here.  Stable.

Constant email logs are annoying - I hope they fix that soon.  Any idea why a device is doing this?  Could it be the VPN software attempting to connect?

Is your RBS in star or Daisy Chain configuration? Just curious.

Thanks for letting us know how yours is running. Ya we hope NG will fix this odd logging and stability issue.

Whats the device at .20 address?

Issue is not VPN.

You can do this, if you enable email logging then disable it. The RBR should continue to run fine. Only if you factory reset and setup from scratch and if you don't re-enable email logging, will the problems re-appear. Mysterious reboots.

I ran my 8 series for 3 days with email enabled, ran fine, then disabled email logging. Ran fine. Factory reset and didn't setup email logging and issue re-appeared .

It's a work computer managed by my company IT department.  (It runs VPN software, but not over the weekend - I figured it was trying to phone home).  The log seems to be repeats of the same entries.

I'll turn off emails, and see what happens.  Thanks.

The repeating log entries is an on-going issue and it has been reported to NG Engineers.  Logs are not clearing properly - part of the reason you are getting multiple logs mailed.   The entire logging/clearing/emailing process is messed up.

Hopefully NG Engineering finds/fixes the issue(s) and hopefully that clears up some of the other issues.

Most email software allows creation of 'rules' or 'filters' which can automatically delete specific messages as they arrive.

The most likely reason for all those specific DHCP log entries is that the device is making DHCP requests for an IP address at frequent intervals.  Routers do not spontaneously issue IP addresses. They respond to requests.  This can be verified by using the option on the debug page (http://orbilogin.net/debug.htm ) to Enable LAN/WAN Packet Capture.  Let it run long enough to capture several of these instances, then Save the log to your computer. Use a program such as Wireshark to open the file lan.pcap and then display only the dhcp packets.  What I expect will show up is a sequence of:

  • Request from device, "please give me an IP address"
  • Response from router, "here. use this IP for 86,400 seconds (one day)"

Since it is a work computer, I would be tempted to ask someone at work, "Hey. Did you know that this laptop constantly issues DHCP requests?.  My home router finds it sort of annoying.  Do these laptops do this in the office as well?"

Re: New - RBR750 / RBS750 Firmware Version 4.6.8.5 Released

Thanks everyone for the helpful info. Followed instructions carefully and I'm up and running on latest firmware with no issues.

With the stability on the latest firmware, are there any recommended settings to get best performance? I'm basically running default settings right now. But looking at CTS / RTS values, they seem awfully low...

RTS/CTS is a complicated issue. See, for example, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11_RTS/CTS and https://www.wi-fiplanet.com/improving-wlan-performance-with-rts-cts/

When there are a LOT of WiFi devices and they keep trying to broadcast at the same time, throughput suffers from the collisions.  Lowering the RTS/CTS value helps prevent the collisions, but at the expense of added overhead.  Netgear has shipped WiFi routers with various default values for RTS/CTS, from 64 to the maximum 2347.

Everybody seems to have an opinion on what an "optimal" value might be.  I lack the sophistication to perform experiments to compare one value with another.

How many RBS do you have deployed. CTS helps with signal collisions between the RBR and other RBS.

I'm currently using just 1 satellite.

Would it ever make sense for CTS and RTS to be set to different values? Or should they always be set the same?

Re: New - RBR750 / RBS750 Firmware Version 4.6.8.5 Released

They can be different I believe should be near or same. CTS can be 2347 and RTS can be 2346 since you only have 1 RBS deployed.

These values help with signal collisions between the RBR and RBS. Having more RBS deployed can cause more collisions in signals.

Re: New - RBR750 / RBS750 Firmware Version 4.6.8.5 Released

Thanks.  I'll try the CTS / RTS settings you proposed.  I thought these values also applied to regular WiFi trafic as well.  But if only between RBR and RBS, then this makes a lot of sense.  Either way, I'll try them out for a few days and see.

Regarding the rest of my configuration, I currently have the following (curious what others are running with success on latest firmware):

Running 4.6.8.5 Firmware w/ email logging enabled

RBR + 1 RBS

WAN aggregation enabled (gigabit ethernet speed tests regularly at 1.2Gbps w/ this)

DNS Server using Cloudflare 1.1.1.1

AX Enable for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz

Guest Network enabled

WAN Setup left at default values (Disable IGMP Proxying, NAT Filtering Secured, Disable SIP ALG)

LAN Setup left at default values (RIP Direction Both, RIP Version Disabled)

20/40 MHz Coexistence disabled

WMM Enabled

CTS/RTS Threshold 2347

Preamble Mode Automatic

Transmit Power 100%

Other Services:

Port Forwarding Disabled

Dynamic DNS Disabled

VPN Service Disabled

Static Routes not used

Web Services Management not used

UPnP Disabled

IPv6 Disabled

Traffic Meter Enabled

VLAN / Bridge not used

Try enabling it, then delete the address configuration, then hit apply. You may see a error here. Ok it then uncheck the enable box again and apply. Info gone?

I presume that process could be done a bit better. I presume NG wants to keep the email configuration in the setting by enabling or disabling for historical use. Would be nice to have a Clear fields button though. Hope that worked though.

Re: New - RBR750 / RBS750 Firmware Version 4.6.8.5 Released

ok been on this ride since begingina dn for last several months or so have had the before firmware and was 95% stable ( some wifi devices dropping and connecting back but like 5 ) before that had the fun all experienced and pulled out hair .

( must admit with previious firmware also did have a reboot issue where reboot orbit and my 4 apple devices could no longer connect had to reboot several times till apple devices connected. So to say rebooting was very limited.

but last night backed up everything ( include location of the lost ark lolol) updated the firmware properly and rebooted everything and instantly all connected and all issue went away. everything has been stable and have made some minot tweaks ( say like change password and stuff nothing like main paramaters and rebooted a few times and had success with Appel devices connecting right away. one time connected dropped and then connected again 30 sec disconnected but that was like 2nd reboot. made like 5 after that and all devices reconnected quickly. satellites have a nice number of items that are close to them .

all look and act great

but

always a but lol

I think I saw other reported but speed , when I do the Speedtest app, is a bit slower than before. it is off like 100 mbps usually (420 to 520 speed conning in is 998). I have to wonder if having issue with 2.4 and 5 and maybe connecting as 2.4 but that not here or there.

did run test for video and said I was way quick enough for 4 k video and have no lad and ran test for gaming and say was at the super max speed. so maybe it is the WMM is slowing down the speed test but not 4k video and games ( have played Disney 4k stuff and was amazing no issues.

just wanted to report my experience and do not want to pull reports and logs and stuff as taking care of a sick dog and not bad enough for me to notices a slowdown other than the numbers

Since I’m signed on to work 24 seven via VPN and every 24 hours sign off and sign back on VPN haven’t seen any blips were any reboots that I didn’t do. If there was any blips would have been kicked of VPN but I am using
VPN on the guest network as that the only think I use on guess Netwerk and nobody else can see it to try and connect to it.

But short answer no issue like that
