Orbi RBR850 V3.2.18.1 DHCP Assigning IPs every few seconds

Related question: Why is model RBR850 not in the selection list for this post?

I have an Orbi RBR850 with one satelite on firmware V3.2.18.1_1.4.14. I noticed that the logs were consitently filling up with DHCP assignments seconds apart and that the logs fill up daily. I have tried a few things like ensuring I have the latest firmware, ensuring my LAN settings are correct. and finally factory resetting and setting the whole thing back up again from scratch. Still I get assignemnts to the same device seconds apart and this happens across devices enough to fill up my logs daily. I have DHCP set up 192.168.1.10-254 and 1 static IP set outside that at 192.168.1.2. I have some port forwarding set up to that server but other than that the settings are pretty vanilla. I have attached a excerpt from today's logs with MAC addesses replaced with device names.

It does not appear that anyone is assigned the task of keeping up the list of Netgear products.

Not only that, but someone decided it makes more sense to separate the community forum by product so that, for example, there is a sepatate forum for the "AX" product line, a separate forum for the Orbi "app" (which has almost no posts), a separate forum for the "Pro" line, for the "voice", for Orbi's with cable modems built-in, but not a separate forum for the outdoor satellite (RBS50Y).

It seems that most people find the community forum by doing an internet search (I searched for "netgear orbi forum") and wind up here.

Sometimes, a question clearly is more likely to get a response if posted in one of those other forums, so the response they get here is along the lines of, "nobody on this forum has one of those. Maybe somebody who does have one will have an answer." with a link to the forum:

https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi-AX/bd-p/en-home-orbi-ax

Other times, the question seems to be generic and someone tries to respond.

In regard to this DHCP question, does this happen to:

  • Only WiFi devices, or both wired and WiFi devices?
  • All devices, or only the ones specifically mentioned?

I have only one Nest, and it renews the IP every 12 hours.

Re: Orbi RBR850 V3.2.18.1 DHCP Assigning IPs every few seconds

I am seeing both wired and wirelss. The most common look to be the GalaxyNote8 (wireless) and the SonyTV (wired).

I havent been checking the MAC addresses long enough to tell if all devices are being reassigned more often than 12 hours but I will keep an eye on it.

Change your phone on MAC address as Phone MAC instead of Randomized MAC

The MAC address is the same for each entry in the logs. I also checked for the setting and it doesn't look like the Galaxy Note 8 has a Randomized vs Device MAC option.

Randomized MAC is usually an option in developer settings

Re: Orbi RBR850 V3.2.18.1 DHCP Assigning IPs every few seconds

Android 10 has Randomized MAC set as default, Galaxy Note 8 sounds not on this, so your issue is not on MAC address related. It needs to capture packets in the air to judge what went wrong with DHCP packets

Re: Orbi RBR850 V3.2.18.1 DHCP Assigning IPs every few seconds

Since the issue is not isolated to the Note 8 I suspect it is not the issue. The same log excerpt without the Note 8 entries still shows multiple devices being assigned the same IP address within seconds, certainly shorter thatn the normal 12 hour lease.

Re: Orbi RBR850 V3.2.18.1 DHCP Assigning IPs every few seconds

Are you using the default IP address pool?

What happens if you change the IP address pool to 192.168.1.100 to .200?

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed on the RBR since last FW update?

@JeramyK wrote:

Since the issue is not isolated to the Note 8 I suspect it is not the issue. The same log excerpt without the Note 8 entries still shows multiple devices being assigned the same IP address within seconds, certainly shorter thatn the normal 12 hour lease.

I have DHCP set up 192.168.1.10-254 and have done a full reset and setup as part of my troubleshooting

Does this happen with ALL of your connected devices or just these that are listed in the log?

It is certainly occurring with all the devices in the log. Answering whether all the devices on my network are similarly reacquiring ips more than every 12 hours, since the factory reset, will take some more in-depth log analysis that I am only just starting. (I forgot to reconfigure admin email after the reset so haven't been getting logs)

These look quite similar:

No answers there either.

Along with the repeated DHCP lines my emailed logs also show an increasing number of entries like those shown in the links above.

i.e.:

Not a particularly helpful log message.  If the issue is worth devoting time and effort to, my approach would be to capture LAN packets and examing them with Wireshark. Routers do not spontaneously assign IP addresses.  Devices broadcast DHCP requests and routers respond to them.  The DHCP response contains the lease time.  If Orbi is assigning a very short lease, the device will ask to renew very soon.

So manually loading previous firmware has fixed the problem?  Is it present on certain firmware and not on others?

I really enjoy researching this sort of issue, but the devices on my Orbi renew DHCP leases every 12 hours, just as they are supposed to do.

It certainly looks like a firmware issue. Nothing outside of the router itself is going to cause the list of 'Thursday, Jan 01,491926 -5:00:00' entries, which I assume is the default date when none is found.

Maybe if I have some time this weekend I will revert to a previous version of the firmware and see if that changes anything.

going to previous firmware will just auto update back to latest

and the dhcp holds randomly from 1 day to 1 hr

You don't happen to have a spare router on hand would you?

@FURRYe38 I am going to guess that if you set it up to send you email when the logs are full you would also start seeing the "Thursday, Jan 01,491926 -5:00:00" entries (they only appear in the emailed results but increase after each mailing, filling up the logs).

I don't hink I have a spare wireless router. I might have an old linksys or something lying around.

I try and set up email logging this weekend.

If you have a spare router, you could use this router as your host router then block the NG update servers to prevent the Orbi from being auto updated, and then revert your Orbi back to older FW if you want to see if this issue happens in older FW.

What a puzzle!  I collect the logs from my (original) Orbi and there are no log entries that start with Jan 01, or contain -5:00.

This is yet another example of the frustration customers face when their Netgear product behaves strangely and there is no documentation or customer service contact to explain it.

One year and one month since I bought it and I can't get support outside of this forum. It is making me think about whether to go with Netgear next time around. Though it's tough since, when they work, they have some of the best products on the market.

I didn't roll the FW back, but I did try setting it to AP mode and allowing my cable modem to do all the work. This made the wireless connection *really* unstable. My work VPN connection would drop repeatedly throughout the day.

I tried going the other way, connecting everything through the Orbi and turning off all the features of my cable modem, but I found that I am also having trouble with Port Forwarding on the Orbi. It fails to forward ports to my wired servers, so that was a no-go.

I am back to connecting my wired devices to my cable router and setting static IPs for port forwarding, running the Orbi in router mode and having it assign IPs to wireless devices, and just dealing with the dumb entries in the logs. At least it is relatively stable this way.

At this point I am assuming something is wrong with the hardware.

I would contact a NG forum moderator to see that your options are...

Re: Orbi RBR850 V3.2.18.1 DHCP Assigning IPs every few seconds

Same problem here!

from 10 to 25 disconnections per day

Most of the times the RBR connects back automatically, but sometime I have to restart it.

Tried many configurations: router mode, access point mode, changed the channel of the wifi, ardware reset at least a dozen of times in few months.

No way: conection to internet absolutely unstable because the IP address of the devices changes many times per day.

Firmware version: v3.2.18.1

What can I try to solve the problem ?

is Netgear working in this issue that looks present in all the RBR850 ?
