WiFi-6 Mesh System and DSL

Greetings All,

I live in a rural area where DSL is my one and only ISP through CenturyLink.  I currently have a Zyxel Dual Band C2100Z (from CenturyLink).

My speeds are very slow.  Download averages 10 Mb and Upload is almost always less than 1 Mb.  Upload is mostly 0.70 Mb. These are the highest speeds available.

I am considering an Orbi WiFi-6 Mesh System .  It's my hope that I will be able to maintain no less than the aforemetioned speeds.  Yes, I'm desperate. Can I loose speeds with this Orbi WiFi-6 Mesh System?

1.  Would the newer Orbi AX6000 (RBS850) WiFi-6 be too much of demand for my DSL as described?

2.  I'm hoping this mesh system will expand my wifi to a larger area and more devices. Netgear says this model mesh system has higher performance. Will that Higher Performance be helpful to my DSL?

This is my first ever post and as I said, I'm desprate.

Thank You!!!

Re: WiFi-6 Mesh System and DSL

Orbi AX or AC will work only with what it gets thru the ISP Modem, No more or No less. Orbi AC will work as well if you don't need AX.

Your ISP modem already has a built in router and wifi. It's recommended to bridge or configure Transparent bridge mode on the modem.

This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop
