Firmware Update Instructions:
To update your router’s firmware, follow the instructions in your router’s user manual. To view your router’s user manual, visit https://www.netgear.com/support/product/RBE971.aspx#docs.
IF MANUALLY UPDATING THE SYSTEM:
Be sure to update the RBS FIRST, then the RBR lastly.
Please navigate to the link below for step-by-step instructions on how to update your RBR971/RBS970:
Proceedure to Manually Firmware Update Orbi and Nighthawk Mesh systems
I HIGHLY recommend after the FW is loaded on the system and it's back to ready, power OFF all Orbi units and the ISP modem/ONT for 1 minute. Then back ON with the ISP modem/ONT first, then RBR then RBS.
NOTE: Orbi app or the routers web page may not report seeing new FW updates. NG may not push this to there auto update services immediately and may activate the newer FW update being seen on there auto update services at a later time. User will have the choice to manually update if you want too.
FW UPDATE ALL Feature:
If there is a FW updated seen on the RBRs web page and all RBS are online and connected with GOOD STATUS, you can select the UPDATE ALL button option to have the RBR update the RBS and RBR. Update All button is seen on the RBRs Firmware Update WEB page on the Check for Updates FW section of the page. Once FW has been checked for an update and all devices show the FW update is available, select the UPDATE ALL button. Give 5 minutes for the process to take place.
NOTE: If continued problems are seen after a FW update, it's recommended to try a factory reset and setup from scratch with out loading any saved configurations from backup files. Use the ERASE button on the routers web page to factory reset the router:
https://kb.netgear.com/000062081/How-do-I-erase-the-configuration-settings-on-my-Orbi-WiFi-System
This sends a Factory Reset command to any and all connected RBS as well.

Re: New - RBE970 / RBE971 Firmware Version 9.12.5.3 (for NA Region Only)
Eventually NG will get the EU and ROW released. NA is usually the first as we have been beta testing it and helping to check it and find any additional issues. There seems to be differences that EU and ROW has that seems to cause NG to hold on for those regions until more testing has completed. Please be patient.

Be sure to save off a new back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.

Re: New - RBE970 / RBE971 Firmware Version 9.12.5.3 (for NA Region Only)
Flawless install on two separate RBE971 systems (one of them remotely) and their satellites (satellites done first!).
Both systems are behind pfSense equipped network appliances and are in Access Point mode - one with another mini-computer running piHole for DNS.
Update was seamless and fast.
Systems are very stable.
Good job to the engineers on this update.
(The update to 9.12.5.3 had not yet populated in the "Update Firmware" menu of the systems.)
Thanks for posting this!

One thing I have noticed on GRC SheidsUP scanning all ports with the new firmware is most ports are now closed instead of stealth.

It appears this update is now available for everyone:
https://kb.netgear.com/000066513/RBE970-RBE971-Firmware-Version-9-12-5-3
It isn’t showing as available in the admin interface, will update manuallly later today.

This combined with the other ongoing latency issues ( working on with ng) - gotta say, it’s frustrating on a £1500 system.

Not seeing that at all on my installs. What does your install look like? Anything unusual about it?

Re: New - RBE970 / RBE971 Firmware Version 9.12.5.3 (for NA Region Only)
Factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since update?
How was the system updated? Auto update or manually?
Does the RBR and RBS show front LEDs when this happens?
Is IPv6, Armor, SPC or Traffic Meter enabled?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.
Which ISP are you with?
How many RBS are deployed?
What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router 📡 and satellite(s)🛰️?
What channel configurations are currently set on the router?
Does this happen with the RBS turned OFF?

I have not noticed any since updating the firmware, but that does not necessarily mean there have not been any. (Oh how I wish the logging function was more capable.)

Amen. So far the only suggestion I have had from support has been to try different channels. I have fewer dropped wifi connections after the update (and channel adjustment) but they are still happening.

Re: New - RBE970 / RBE971 Firmware Version 9.12.5.3 (for NA Region Only)
Updated manually and factory reset and just had another reboot on the router. Wifi went down and checked the unit and it was flashing white (which I believe signifies it's rebooting). Satellite had the pink light denoting loss of connection (which you'd expect as the router went offline).
Is IPv6, Armor, SPC or Traffic Meter enabled?
No
Using CAT8 STP with some CAT7 STP on some devices.
I've seeon the orbi reddit thread theres a post on pixel 9 devices causing reboots (apparently was a bug on the 770 series but might also affect 970). I've turned that completely off for now and will see if that also helps. I'll also provide updates on the existing ng support ticket which has been open over 3 months now as well.

So you have a Pixel phone?
What region are you located?
I presume this was seen on prior FW version as well?

I have Pixel 9 (a new work phone) and iPhone 16 Pro (personal). I've had all the same wifi dropping issues on the iphone as others here - nothing new there. I'm in the UK.
I've not seen the crashes on the previous FW and I've had the pixel in the house over the past week and not seen any issues. Only started on FW upgrade. I'll try another factory reset at the weekend in case I missed something. I might try downgrading to the prev stable FW also.

Ok, let us know if disconnecting the pixel phone first stops the reboot. If it continues, I'd downgrade FW then factory reset then setup from scratch. Disable the auto update feature on the RBR as well, then test again.

Ive been running my Pixel 9 Pro XL since release on this router and havent seen any persisting or repeating issues. Maybe once every 2 weeks or so it will drop connection to the router and I toggle the wifi tile and all is well. I am in the US.

Re: New - RBE970 / RBE971 Firmware Version 9.12.5.3 (for NA Region Only)
Wanted to chime in here, because this Orbi 970 has been a royal pain and coming from an RBK40 system, I honestly expected way better. 9.2.4.16 was horrible. 9.12.5.3 is slightly better. It fixed random disconnections of my satellites, I’ve done hard resetting everything, hell I’ve even tried nmrpflashes on the satellites, throughput still is degraded on both wired and wireless. Debug logs show things are good with the router itself, but every single satellite reports TR and RX issues . I’m not exaggerating, every single satellite I own reports that in the debugs. Every single satellite I own also reports NVRAM issues, the router does not. None of my satellites after a factory reset of them emit the factory default SSID and password that is labeled on each unit either. They used to, they don’t now. I don’t know if Netgear changed that behavior, they never tell you and talking to support is like talking to a brick wall.
I’m changing all my cabling out to TrueCable Direct Burial Shielded Cat6A as my ISP piped Cat5e cable and did horrific ends, so I want to rule that out this Saturday, but if that doesn’t work I don’t know what else more I can do. I’ve provided logs to Netgear, but it just is a back and forth ping pong game and not a single technician has escalated it to an engineer to at least just review the logs!
My plan is 400down, 50up, yet my Orbi only pushes 120-200 across all devices direct at the router and from satellites.

Re: New - RBE970 / RBE971 Firmware Version 9.12.5.3 (for NA Region Only)
So when doing a factory reset with the PDF process with the RBS near or in same room as the RBR, do they auto sync at all to the RBRs default SSID network prior to starting the setup wizard with a PC and web browser?
How was FW on the system updated? Automatically by the system or manually and did you update the RBS first then the RBR lastly?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router 📡 and satellite(s)🛰️? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR 📡 and RBS 🛰️ to begin with depending upon building materials when wired or wirelessly connected.
https://kb.netgear.com/31029/Where-should-I-place-my-Orbi-satellite 🛰
What channel configurations are currently set on the router?
What wifi devices are you connecting to the system?
Be sure to disable any MAC Address randomizers on phones and pads while at home:

Re: New - RBE970 / RBE971 Firmware Version 9.12.5.3 (for NA Region Only)
@FURRYe38 , the satellites if factory reset do not broadcast any SSIDs if factory reset and only do a solid white to indicate they are ready to synchronize with the router. If I do a sync via the router’ UI or the physical sync buttons, they will sync fine and join the network and start broadcasting the same SSID as the router.
Firmware is always manually installed on satellites and router (I hate auto update, so I have always turned that off on any Orbi systems). I update each satellite one by one first, then update the router.
Router is connected to my ISP’s Tarana G1 Remote Note (they’re a fixed wireless provider). Cable from internet port of router plugs into LAN port of the Taran’a POE injector.
I have main router at building where the Tarana resides, then 3 satellites. One satellite receives the internet from the router via a Nanostation 5AC Loco PTP System (to pipe the internet into my home), essentially creating a wired backhaul, with the other two satellites then connecting themselves to the satellite that has the wired backhaul. ISP has clear line of sight at the adjacent building so that is why the setup is this way. Wi-Fi broadcasts within that building to serve clients there as well.
4000 square feet home, but that doesn’t include outside perimeters which I have Ring cameras connected to. Satellites are 40-50 feet apart from each other and the router is about 0.2 miles away from the house. This is irrelevant, as it spikes to the proper bandwidth across all areas for a brief period, then starts to be erratic on bandwidth, then eventually bombs. I can even test with only one satellite connected. NOTHING, makes a difference.
I have Apple TVs, MacBooks, iPhones, Ring Cameras, and many iOT devices. I have 52 devices connected to my system.
Disabling the randomizes make zero difference.
