Orbi CBR40 use as router/ mesh system only

Question

I have an orbi cbr40 which is a cable modem router with (1) satellite. I just upgraded my xfinity service to gig speed, however they tell me it is not compatible with gig speeds. The CBR40 is a DOCSIS 3.0 and i am told i need a modem that is a DOCSIS 3.1. I want to purchase a DOCSIS 3.1 modem ONLY and see if it is possible to re-purpose the orbi as a router/ mesh wi-fi system. Can this be done? if so, how can it be done?
