RBS20 currently running firmware 2.6.1.38; Netgear shows 2.7.3.22 is available but orbilogin says no new software available. Why the discrepancy? Should I manually install new firmware or wait until orbilogin suggests it?

CBK is the Kit version which includes the CBR and RBS in the box. K is just Kit. RBK kits include a RBR and RBS in the box.
If it works, don't fix it. You don't have to update the RBS.

Re: RBS20 firmware update
Well since the RBS is appart of the CBK box set kit, the RBS may not show as a update on that system since the CBK kit belongs to a different system so the RBS may not see same updates as what is used on the RBK kits.

v2.7.3.22 is last posted version for the CBK kit.
Though you can update the RBS manually, there is a known issue with current FW on the CBR and RBS which wired connections to the RBS have super slow speed performances:

Re: RBS20 firmware update
Hmm. Don't hava a CBK, but CBR cable modem. The RBS and CBR were shipped together in same 'kit' so should know about each other. ?
Only wired connection I have from CBR to Apple TV. RBS is wireles only to its users.
So far they play well together but RBS firmware certainly out of date.
