Note: Model above is incorrect, would not let me select RBK50
I have an RBR50/RBS50 setup that I am trying up put into service.
It is running V1.1.0.16.
I am trying to do the first stage manual update to RBS50-V2.2.1.212, but when I hit upload it spins for a while, then returns:
This firmware file is incorrect! Please get the firmware file again and make sure it is the correct firmware for this product.
Is there another interim update I need to install first?

Try v2.0.0.74 first on the RBS...

Okay, so I log into the satellite (IP easy to guess, since currently only 3 nodes).
Select Firmware update and browse to "RBS50-V2.2.1.212.img".
I get the following message, "Please select correct configuration file".

Re: Firmware update on RBS50 fails
You are correct that the Release Notes state that versions up to 2.1.2.210 require updating to 2.1.2.210 first. That was because back in 2016 when the Orbi was designed, nobody though the firmware file would grow as large as it did, and there was a "maximum file size" hard coded into the firmware update process. 2.1.2.212 was released specifially for the purpose of increasing that file size limit.
Are you trying to update by connecting to the router "Firmware Update" web page or connecting to the satellite "Firmware Update"?

Re: Firmware update on RBS50 fails
I am logged into the web interface on the router.
Browse to the unzipped .img file for the satelite and click upload.

Re: Firmware update on RBS50 fails
Because for versions prior to 2.2.1.210 must perform a manual update to 2.2.1.212 first.

Re: Firmware update on RBS50 fails
We have two topics going.
- How to manually update?. My guess is that the web browser should be connected to the satellite, rather than the router.
- Why not let Netgear take care of this? I fear that firmware back in the "1" series may be "too old" and Netgear's update logic too confused to properly handle this. For example, Netgear's logic may think that any Orbi from "back in the day" was surely automatically updated (over and over) and no longer recognizes something that old.
This is easy to test: Leave it alone for a week (7 days). If it hasn't updated automatically by then, it is not likely to.

Leave alone is good.

Re: Firmware update on RBS50 fails
I have only one IP address to access both router and satellite.

Re: Firmware update on RBS50 fails
Sorry (I make assumptions all the time). On the Orbi Attached Devices web page (at the top), it will show the IP address of the satellite.
Just open a web browser to http://<ip of satellite>

If you can browse to the "img" file, then it has been successfully "un-zipped". So, this makes no sense. I have lost track of what platform you are using (Windows or Mac). Could the "img" file have additional hidden characters in the file name?
I see two ways forward:
- Since the satellite is on the initial firmware (the very first one), how about trying to update to one of the "1" firmwares first, such as 1.2.0.6. Maye there something about the initial few firmwares that was "different"?
- The "last resort" is to force firmware onto the router using TFTP:
https://kb.netgear.com/000059633/How-to-upload-firmware-to-a-NETGEAR-router-using-TFTP-client
https://kb.netgear.com/000059634/How-to-upload-firmware-to-a-NETGEAR-router-using-Windows-TFTP
(I have no idea why there are two slightly different Knowledge Base articles on this subject. There may be others I have not run across.)
I have done this myself a number of times. It is not "trivial" or "user friendly".

Re: Firmware update on RBS50 fails
Thanks @FURRYe38, that did the trick.
I updated both manually:
V1.1.0.16 -> V2.0.0.74 -> V2.2.1.212 -> V2.3.0.32
Then let it do the final version V2.5.1.16 automatically.
I also re-downloaded firmware in case original was corrupted, but that was probably overkill.
Thanks for all the help.

Re: Firmware update on RBS50 fails
Great to hear, ya, v74 is key if the orbi is on v1x version.
Glad you got it working. Enjoy.
