I have owned the ORBI system for a year now, And it just has WAY too many problems.
Netgear still appears to be in an early Alpha stage with the OS. Seeing as nearly every few months there are MAJOR router crashing issues that takes weeks to repair.
Sadly this leaves me with more time that the system has issues than times when the system just works.
These past 3 months October to December have easily been the worst times with the system yet.
Neatgear's communication level has been awesome. But sadly.. I still have a $400 Product that simply does not work 20% of the time.
November 2016 - January 2017 - Initially there were simply firmware issues with minor crashes and disconnects, hand offs from Router to satellite. But overall it was more stable than the previous Nighthawk we had.
January 2017 - April 2017 - Constantly drops wifi for individual devices. 1 or 2 devices would simply lose connection and not be able to re-connect without a reboot or turning wifi on and off on that device. Occured over so many device issue was the system.
June 2017 - July 2017 - Samsung S8 bug. Never learned if this was Samsung, Netgear, or Android related. Sadly combined with weekly crashes of the ORbi's we also had this issue where Only Samsung S8 devices could not connect at all. Someone fixed it around July/August, but I never looked into where the cause was.
August 2017 - Coverage of Router and Satellite drop DRASTICALLY. Before a single Nighthawk could cover 20 feet beyond my property. And the ORBI covered a little bit less. Maybe 10 feet beyond the property. Suddenly the Orbi does not even cover inside the house. Kitchen gets No Wifi now for many devices. Like the Google Home, 2 Wifi Security Cameras, and 1 Phone. The Nexus 6. All other devices get -60db.
August - September 2017 - Overall stable-ish. But lots of points in the day where we could not use out full internet speed. Even wired.
October-December 2017 - Router and or Satellite crash multiple times a day. No reliable internet connection from the ORBI system for stretches of time lasting 5 minutes to 2 hours.
I was in the store today debating buying a 2nd Satellite.. When I realized that my old Nighthawk, while also unreliable in a few ways... Covered MUCH more area from the basement than the 2 Orbis do spread over the house.
I simply cannot recommend this system. It is one of the worst routers I have ever owned. When it works it is one of the best for speed. Sadly it's coverage pretty much died a few months ago.
I will be working with Best Buy / Netgear over the next week to return and be refunded for the system. If they will not refund me. I will simply Sell the system, and Never use a Netgear product again.
