ORBI RBR50: Low Upload/Download speeds

Hi, I'm with Shaw in Canada. I have the Internet 300 plan. Noticed slow upload/download speeds when running Ookla's speed test on my iMac. Talked to Shaw support. They had me plug my modem in directly to the iMac. Ran the speed test again, and got:

Dowload: 320 Mbps

Upload: 16 Mbps

I hooked the router back up the way I normally have it (cable between Modem and ORBI router), and ran the speed test again, and got:

Download: 121 Mbps

Upload: 10.33 Mbps

My router setup:

Fiirmware Version: 2.5.1.16

Wireless:

  • 2.4 Channel: Auto (I’ve tried specifying a channel in the past, but it didn’t make a difference in speed).
  • 5 Channel: 48
  • Security Options: WPA2-PSK [AES]

Internet:

  • Internet IP address: Get Dynamically from ISP
  • DNS Address: Get automatically from ISP
  • Router MAC address: Use Default Address

Advanced Setup:

  • Enable SSID Broadcast: Yes
  • Enable 20/40 MHz Coexistence: Yes
  • Enable WMM (Wi-Fi multimedia) settings: Yes
  • CTS/RTS Threshold (1-2347): 2347
  • Preamble Mode: Automatic
  • Transmit Power Control: 100%
  • Enable SSID Broadcast: Yes
  • Enable WMM settings: Yes
  • Enable Daisy-Chain Topology: No
  • Enable Implicit BEAMFORMING: Yes
  • Enable MU-MIMO: Yes
  • Enable Fast Roaming: No
  • Dynamic DNS: Use a Dynamic DNS Service: Yes (www.NO-IP.com)
  • VPN Service: No
  • UPnP On: No

Router is right next to iMac downstairs. Satellite is upstairs around 40 feet away (I know, I know).

Checked WiFi Explorer. It registers about 4 neighbors. No shared channels that I can see.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Re: ORBI RBR50: Low Upload/Download speeds

Run the Speed test from the app or WEB GUI > This will give you the wired internet speed from the Orbi, through your ISP router.

Using the WEB GUI, go to Advanced, Advanced Setup, Wereless Settings:

Uncheck Enable 20/40 MHz Coexistence

Check Enable WMM (Wi-Fi multimedia) settings

Check Enable Implicit BEAMFORMING - Boosts WiFi speed, reliability, & range for all mobile devices

Check Enable MU-MIMO

Uncheck Enable Fast Roaming

Re: ORBI RBR50: Low Upload/Download speeds

Are you testing the speed on the mac over wifi or hardwired?

Re: ORBI RBR50: Low Upload/Download speeds

Hi,

Tested it on the iMac hardwired to modem (fast speeds), and then over WiFi (modem connected to Orbi -- slow speeds).

Thanks. Several of thos flags are already true, as mentioned, but I'll try the other suggestions after work.

I read on another thread, where other Imac owners are experiencing the same slow WIFI. One user decided to try a USB based WIFI card and his speeds were excellent. He mentioned an issue with the Imac WIFI card.

Re: ORBI RBR50: Low Upload/Download speeds

try the hardwired test to the router to see what speeds you get. Especially because if the mac was connected to 2.4ghz, you'd expect it to be much slower than 5ghz.

Re: ORBI RBR50: Low Upload/Download speeds

Sorry, by "hardwired test to the router", you mean ethernet cable between modem and ORBI? That's how I normally have it set up, and the setup that resulted in low up/down speeds.

Re: ORBI RBR50: Low Upload/Download speeds

No I mean hardwire your mac to the orbi router to test the speed. Don't test it over wifi. With orbi using bandsteering, if you're connected to the 2.4ghz and not 5ghz, it'll be much slower. Plus it ensures the router is getting full speed and outputting full speed by testing hardwired.

Re: ORBI RBR50: Low Upload/Download speeds

Interesting. I'll look into that. I'll admit, though, that I currently don't know what a "a USB based WIFI card" is.

Thanks.
