I found the RBR50 selling the two piece set for $269, which is about $100 less than the RBK50 two piece system which makes me suspect there must be a significant difference. Cannot find an article explaining what the difference might be.

Correct. You will not be able to pair two Orbi Routers together to form a system. You need 1 Orbi Router + (1 or more) Satellites. We do sell Stand Alone Orbi Routers and Stand Alone Satellites

Re: Orbi RBK50 vs RBR50 Difference
RBK50 is a kit, one RBR50 Router and one RBS50 Satellite.
RBR50 is just the Router designation, so if its two pieces of RBR50 you are getting two routers. Not very useful together.
