Orbi RBR20 - Intel AX200 Wifi Losing Connection

Hi,

Having an issue with Orbi RBR20 router with two sattelites.

New laptop with Intel AX200 wifi. Upon connecting to the orbi network, there initially is internet for about 30 seconds, then you get 'ERR Network Changed' messages, then no internet, then the wifi disconnects.

The laptop connects to other wifi networks fine and will connect via wired connection.

Sometimes, unplugging the mesh satellites allows the laptop to stay connected.

Orbi router and satellites on latest firmware (V2.3.5.26) Intel AX200 card on latest drivers.

Have reset the network settings on the laptop a few times.

Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions?

Re: Orbi RBR20 - Intel AX200 Wifi Losing Connection

Just to follow up, Have sinced used a couple of different router models, one wifi 6 router, and another AC mesh system. Both worked fine. So it looks like there is some sort of issue with the Orbi routers and these early wifi 6 cards from intel. Could be a device / driver issue, but as the cards work with everythinng else tested its more like the Orbi. For now it's been simpler to just replace the Orbi.

Re: Orbi RBR20 - Intel AX200 Wifi Losing Connection

What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the NG router is connected too?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Try enabling Beamforming and MIMO(MIMO may or maynot be needed) and WMM. Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, Circle, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update?

Do other devices experience this same issue or only this one laptop?

Re: Orbi RBR20 - Intel AX200 Wifi Losing Connection

Do other devices experience this same issue or only this one laptop?

No just this laptop (Dell Precision 7740 with Intel AX200 Wifi card). Have loads of other devices connected fine (4 Google Home Mini, 6 Lifx bulbs, Nvidia Shield TV, Chromecasts, Smart TVs, other laptops, a macbook, a mac mini, google pixel 3 xl phone).

So it's not the network itself, that works great and has been great for a year. Get 360mbps down and 38mbps up on the router (virgin media). The hubs aren't that far apart, between 3 and 5 metres (all shorter than 30ft) and not going through anything unusual. Strength in the orbi app / admin is green on the satellites.

It's only this one wifi card for some reason. I'm just not sure if it's an issue with the card, or the orbi router. However, the laptop works on every other network I've tried, so feel it might be the Orbi or satellites.

Will try running through the other options you mentioned, don't feel it's a signal issue though.

Thanks for your help, appreciate it!

M

Re: Orbi RBR20 - Intel AX200 Wifi Losing Connection

I would make contact with the Laptop Mfr or Intel and ask about this...possible faulty adapter.

Re: Orbi RBR20 - Intel AX200 Wifi Losing Connection

Thanks Furry,

Swapped the wifi card in the laptop for a new, different model (Killer AX1650) and the issue is the same.

Also, tried all the settings on off as you mentioned plus a factory reset., issue is still there. It connects briefly then gets kicked off.

There's not a huge amount of traffic in the area, you can see in the wifi analysis attached.

It must be either an issue with the Intel chipset on the wifi card or the Orbi router.

As the card connects fine to other networks, it's most like an issue with the Orbi router.

Do you know if netgear have a bug submission form or any way to contact them about the issue?

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Re: Orbi RBR20 - Intel AX200 Wifi Losing Connection

Good troubleshooting.

Sounds like the Orbi maybe at fault here.

Submit a support ticket here:

https://www.netgear.com/mynetgear/registration/login.aspx

Ask about an RMA.

Common issue under some cominations, depends on the radio chipset (makers) of the routers. Head to the Inhell driver update section and grab the current drivers - vendor distributed drivers are typically outdated, or released very late. Known issue with both the Inhell AX200 and the Killer (which is again a very similar Inhell chiset).

Re: Orbi RBR20 - Intel AX200 Wifi Losing Connection

Cheers,

Yes have tried both vendor drivers direct from Dell Pro support (newer than the ones on the support page) and the latest intel drivers. Plus the latest killer drivers. No change. But yes the Intel AX200 and killer AX1650 are essentially the same intel chipset.

Thing is, the issue isn't there with other routers (netgear, Asus, Linksys, TP-Link) have connected to so many without issue, including another mesh system.

Plus, if you turn off the satellites, it connects to just the Orbi router fine. So it looks more likely to be some handover between the router and the satellites. Would file a bug report / feedback to netgear but they don't have that type of support.
