Orbi RBR50 + satellite drop internet over and over

Help! I am not tremendously computer literate but I bought Orbi system and 1 satellite in dec.2017 as supposed upgrade and to get better WiFi extension through whole house. This is second time I am having huge problem with over and over dropping of WiFi for hours at a time. Can’t stream movies. Can’t do anything. Cable internet system confirmed it’s not internet service. No idea why this is happening or how to fix. Last time this happened for about a month then improved. Been cutting out for 3 days now. help! How do I find out what version software I have? I think it auto updates. Support is a joke when I have to pay after 90 days when it’s Orbi product that is malfunctioning.

How big is your home? SqFeet? 

Distance between router and satellite? Starting should be 30 feet in between.

Any wifi neighbors near by? Scan and see how many there might be. 

What channels are you using? Try 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz.

Disable MIMO, Daisy Chain and Fast Roaming...

As Last resort, try a factory reset on the router and satellite and set up from scratch...

Orbi router and satellite have been working fine since last summer when purchased. Within in the past 2 weeks, I have noticed I'm having connection issues. We noticed this using the Xbox at first -- and have now noted that in general, there's not consistent internet connection on PCs, phones, etc. Have scoured the internet and cannot find a solutiong. Please help. As pricey as this product was, it is unacceptable that tech support is not free after 90 days.

This is what I am running. Can anyone help?

Distance between router and satellite? Starting should be 30 feet in between.

Any wifi neighbors near by? Scan and see how many there might be. 

What channels are you using? Try 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz.

Disable MIMO, Daisy Chain and Fast Roaming...

As Last resort, try a factory reset on the router and satellite and set up from scratch...

Distance between router and satellite is 35 feet

Using channel 11 - tried what you recommended. Severe interference on all other channels.

Tried factory reset - still no luck.

PC - Sprint Airave 2.5 - Arris SB Modem - Orbi

Your ISP modem is a gateway router already. So you have two routers online thus a double NAT condition. You need to try one of the following:

1. Bridge the ISP modem.

2. If the modem can't be bridged, use it's DMZ for the IP address that the Orbi router gets from the ISP modem. Disable ALL wireless radios ON the ISP modem.

3. Use the modem as your main router and configure the Orbi router for AP mode. Disable ALL wireless radios ON the ISP modem.

Looks like my thread got hijacked a little.

i have an arris surfboard sb6141 for a modem

i have firmware version 2.1.4.10

its a 4000 sq. Ft house and the satellite is maybe 35 ft from main unit.

but the problem isn’t the signal between the main and satellite. Strength when internet is on is very good. Problem is that we are losing internet over and over. Was out for 3 hrs today and it’s not internet provider- spectrum. I checked that first.

no close neighbors

i don’t know how to tell what channel I am using or what Mimi, daisy chain or fast roaming is

I've been fighting with this problem after firmware V2.1.1.16 which worked fine with ethernet backhaul. I tried disabling the auto update with no sucess. After today I am finally done with wasting hours of my time downgrading the firmware back to V2.1.1.16 and reconfiguring after each auto update.  Good riddance Netgear Orbi RBK50 !

Do you still have access to the routers web page when you loose internet access? 

Log into the Orbi router and Find Basic/Wireless you find the setting for 2.4Ghz and 5ghz. Maybe using auto on 2.4Ghz. Try setting this to 1, 6 or 11. Try 11 first if you don't have any nieghbors. 

You can find MIMO, Daisy Chain and Fast Roaming under Advanced/Advanced Wireless Settings. Uncheck mark these to disable them, apply then reboot the router.

Have you try my suggestions yet?

The ORBI sees the modem and says it's connected, but no internet. If I connect to the modem via wifi or cable the internet is working. V2. 1.1.16 works great until it auto updates.

Whats the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the Orbi is connected too? 

Was a full reboot of the Orbi router and satellite performed after the most resent version of FW was applied? 

As last resort, do a full factory reset on the router and satellites then setup from scratch. This has worked for others...Including me.

My problem exactly. I’m so done with Netgear and their $300 piece of crap. My old Apple Time Capsule may have given me half the speed but at least I could connect to the internet without rebooting the damn thing 2-3 times a day.

i bought in February and it worked like a charm. My dreams had come true. Netgear forced a firmware update after my return window had closed and now all I want to do is toss the freaking thing out the window.

Hi FURRYe38,  Thanks for the concern, but I'm done with spending any more time troubleshooting problems for Netgear.  I've read thru all the forums, tried all the suggestions and still end up having the same issues. It may run for a few days or fail just after logging out of the setup wizard from a factory reset.  I've spent literally 20-30 hours trying to isolate the problem. I'm a retired engineer from Lockheed Martin and have been programming computers since the CP/M-86 days.  Netgear has a problem with their firmware, some setups work fine and others fail.  Mine, unfortunately, fails with any update above 2.1.1.16 that was released in December.  If I could just stop the auto updates I would be happy but unfortunately, Netgear forces this issue.   This was my first personal Netgear product and will be my last.  I'm sure they will solve the problem eventually but I'm done problem-solving.

Update:

While working on the PC this morning, the Orbi network internet failed once again. I checked internet access via the router login; the internet status says GOOD, which it's false. I connected to the MoFI LTE Modem WiFi internet the internet works and modem status is ok. I just reflashed to V2.1.1.16 yesterday. Below are the logs after the Orbi auto updated to V2.1.4.10 when the internet failed. After that I restored it version V2.1.1.16 and everthing works as it should. The log says a DoS Attack is the problem using V2.1.4.10, but I don't have this problem when I flash back to V2.1.1.16.  The many different IP's are cameras, PC's, TV's, Google Home, etc.

Update:  

If I disconnect the satellite from the wired back haul it woks as it should- No DoS attacks or internet loss.  I have the satellite in a metal building, which works fair as long as the shop doors are fully open. Once the doors are shut there is no siginal via the 5.G back haul channel. WiFi calling fails traveling from the office to the shop or vice versa unless I use the wired back haul. Something in the updated firmware is causing this problem with wired back haul as V2.1.1.16 does not have them issue.

I was having similar issues where my Orbi RB50 would not provide stable WiFi connection. After one week of troubleshooting and replacing modem and Orbi, level 2 support provided me with a beta firmware which seems to have fixed the problem.

CURIOUS - has Netgear manned up yet?  I am living the same problem every day - Orbi worked for 11 months, updated to latest firmware and now it drops service.  ISP has been here twice, tested their signal - all, ok.  Orbi shows Wifi but drops the internet whenever it decides to.  Am I a $300 BETA tester?  If so, warn me next time and I will buy something that works.

What FW is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the IP modem the Orbi is connected too?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between them to begin with depending upon building materials.

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?
Try disabling the following and see:
MIMO, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).
