Is the RBK43-100NAS Orbi system compatible with Xfinity docsis 3.1 gateways?

Should work fine you will either need to bridge the gateway or run orbi in AP mode.

I am a bit iof a novice - a bridge as in a switch that conditions it down from 1GBPS to somehting the Orbi can handle?

when you bridge the cable mode it turns it into nothing but a pure modem and all its router functions are bypassed
you will have to check if your cable modem can be bridged and if it can you can then run the orbi system behind it in router mode
if you cant bridge your cable modem you just then run the orbi system in AP mode from its adavanced menu so it works as just a wireless access point system and your cable modem does the routing
you can run the orbi router behind the cable mode with both acting as routers but you will create 2 subnets and issue with port forwarding and UPnP if you do it this way and its best to ether bridge the cable modem or run the orbi in AP mode as described above
