So if you plug in one of the RBS ethernet cables after the RBS has been wireless connected, does the RBRs web page report wired or wireless after giving the RBS 5 minutes to reconfigure the ethernet connection?

I'll check with my RBR50 to see if there is any updates, if not, I can install the v4 using the files downloaded.

@theoak Interesting. I suspect that my wired backhaul might work if I followed @FURRYe38 suggestion and did a factory reset. I have to say that as the wireless 5Ghz link is reporting "Good" and a Speedtest connected to said satellite is giving me exactly the same speed as connected to the router, I'm leaving mine on wireless backhaul for now.

So, I suspect we could say that you may need to to a factory reset when install 2.5.2.4 or you may not but so far for two of us at least, it seems to be pretty good

I am not sure who your question was directed to. For me RBR web and Orbi iOS app report "Wired" for the wired satellite and "5G" for the wireless satellite with regards to "Connection Type".

Re: RBK50 Firmware Version 2.5.2.4?

I was also running the .32 firmware, and actually just checked netgear.com earlier today and saw that 2.5.1.16 was the latest version.  Logged into the router and satellite and saw that via the UI that they had both been upgraded without my consent and my knowledge to 2.5.2.4.  Not too happy about this to be honest.  My wife was complaining all day today about her iPhone not keeping a signal, and I bet this is why.  She had to switch to use data to take some video calls for work as a result.  I think I'll downgrade to 2.5.1.16 tonight.  I'd almost consider this hacking by Netgear as I thought I had auto-updates disabled on the routers specifically for this reason, nor did I authorize this software install.  I also have a RBS20 in the mix, which is still running 2.5.1.16 as best I can tell.  Thank you netgear for hacking my home wifi!  I'm really not happy abouot this, in case you can't tell.  But I have the feeling I probbaly authorized Netgear to do this when I clicked on their EULA or something.... *Sigh*  Can't trust anyone these days.

if this question was aimed at me, I can tell you that unplugging, waiting a minute and replugging the Ethernet cable then leaving for a couple of hours made no difference - still on wireless backhaul.  I then unplugged satellite, left for 5 mins, replugged back in and after a couple of hours was still on wireless.

i didn't reboot router (RBR50) as other family members were using WiFi. After doing my speed tests connected to satellite and they came back as well as the router, I thought it best to leave as is for now. It's wirk8ng and stable and I don't want to mess that up.

Reverted back to 2.5.1.16 and now it stays on that version and no mentions of any new firmware at all.....

That is my results as well. If on 2.5.1.16, there is no update available. If newer, I think Netgear pushed an update because of issues with the firmware prior to 2.5.2.4.

I had the idea that I suffered from enormous drops in speed. After reverting back it seems more stable.

Re: RBK50 Firmware Version 2.5.2.4?

These auto updates are a mystery to me... I have always had to manually update my firmware and only did so when I checked for the latest version. I updated both my Orbi RBR and RBS 50 to V2.5.2.4 when I checked the latest firmware awhile back and I haven't had any problems with my connections.

Re: RBK50 Firmware Version 2.5.2.4?

I posted this in another thread about fimware:

Since there is so much confusion out there, (I know I'm confused), about what firmware is official and what firmware is causing issues, etc., plus the fact that my company installs these systems for customers, I contacted Netgear direct and talked to their support specialist.

According to the Netgear specialist:

"There is no firmware 2.5.1.22, 2.5.1.32 and as well 2.5.2.4 for RBR40, RBR50, even on RBR50v2 -The latest firmware for RBR40, RBR50,  RBR50v2 should be "2.5.1.16" - It is Highly suggested that to install firmware for the appropriate model number only which is posted on our Netgear support site. Could you elaborate where you are seeing 2.5.1.22, 2.5.1.32 and 2.5.2.4 for download?"

Many of you are saying that Netgear is pushing these newer firmware to your Orbi systems, but Netgear is saying no. I checked the last 10 installs, and had our customers, check the version number on their Orbi devices. All are on 2.5.1.16 and all systems were new out of the box.

This raises a valid question, as to where these versions are coming from and why some have received them and others not.

So, to take a poll, who received the newer firmware who purchased their product new from an authorized seller, and who received the newer firmware who purchased their product used?

Re: RBK50 Firmware Version 2.5.2.4?

I am running RBR50v2 router/satellite purchased new from Best Buy.  Mine were updated to 2.5.1.32 which was downloaded from Netgear (no doubt about where it came from, I always absolutely verify).  A couple 2 or 3 weeks ago Netgear pushed an update on both route and satellite to 2.5.2.4 overnight with no notice.  I did not request it and have auto updates turned off.

Re: RBK50 Firmware Version 2.5.2.4?

I would disregard any notifications for v70 version. Nothing has been posted about it and seems to have cuased problems for others that loaded it thru the Orbi app. Even v4 hasn't been posted officially and not sure if it will. Just someone posted the auto update server links to it for those who wanna try it, unofficially.

Official supported released FW is v16 currently seen on NG update page. I recommend that users keep this loaded and avoid loading of anything else until such time as you see something new on NGs download web page.

Re: RBK50 Firmware Version 2.5.2.4?

@Mstrbig Not sure if you're still in touch with support but if so you can provide them these links:

NOTE: I have not tested these links and there is no documentation/release notes:

<Direct links to firmware downloads have been removed for security purposes. Please contact ChristineT for details.>

Note that these files have a different prefix than the regular downloads: `https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RBK50/`

I purchased my Orbi from Newegg on ebay as a "manufacturer refurbished" unit.

My system was auto-updated and to date I have not seen any release notes, etc.  I did receive a "your orbi has been updated..." message on my phone.

Re: RBK50 Firmware Version 2.5.2.4?

Those links are auto update links used by the system. Not meant for used by users idealy. NG would be already aware of these and any information behind them.

If your system auto upated to v4 then you can keep it loaded and use it. If you see problems, I recommnend you factory reset the system and setup from scratch and see if the problems resolve. If not, then revert to v16. I have not had a chance to load v4 yet and last time I checked, v4 wan't avaialble on it. v16 has been working well for me and others.

I'm sure NG will post something when and if they deside v4 is approved for public release.

Re: RBK50 Firmware Version 2.5.2.4?

I don't thikn we need to go down conspiracy theory paths here.

The simple explanation is the person you talked to at Netgear has no clue what they were talking about.

I spend a good bit of my job talked to tech support and it is surprising how often that is the case, at least at first untill you explain how they can'tbe right and force them to look further into it.

We know that a bunch of folks here downloaded 2.5.1.32 from their website where it was up for months (protected by cert, so definitely them unless large hack was done)  despite the app not offering it as an auto-update.  Had you pointed that out and forced him to go find something that actually knew what was going on that and its being pulled etc you might have gotten answers.

What we know is the folks with the .32 firmware all got auto-updated to 2.5.2.4. around the same time .32 it was pulled from the website.   At least at some point if you reinstalled .32 it updated again.  It also updated an satellites to that same version.  And just recently started updating 40 series to  2.5.1.22.

And you can install .16 and it will stay at that version.

At some pont one woudl expect they will decide what they have been developing is stable enough to be the official release and this will all line up.

Where did your conspiracy theory statement come from? I never said anything about a conspiracy, LOL.

Do you know the person I talked to? I contacted my reliable source, who had a"clue what they were talking about".

I didn't need to find someone for answers, as he was the one with the answers.

I don't doubt the fact that the ones, that installed the bad firmware, received an emergency update or 2 or 3, as there are even newer firmware versions available.

And you are probably correct assuming that sooner or later Netgear will get their S$&* together and come up with a correct firmware version.

Re: RBK50 Firmware Version 2.5.2.4?

My particular concern is that there is no mention of an automatic update mechanism in the Orbi documentation.  How and when does an automatic update take place?  What is the notification mechanism?  Is there a way to disable or schedule automatic updates?

- A failed update can lead to a bricked device
- The update interrupts connectivity
- Firmware updates often introduce new issues
- My device is not under support so in the case of a problem I would have to purchase an expensive (relative to device cost) support contract

The only notification I received about the update was a notification on my phone which had the Orbi app.  To date, there's no description of the changes.

Yes, I know that I can manually downgrade but that's not the point...

Re: RBK50 Firmware Version 2.5.2.4?

I found a couple of links that describe how to turn of automatic updates.  You have to telnet to the device and manually configure a flag.

According to the change, this must be done each time the router is restarted

https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi/How-to-stop-auto-firmware-updates-on-Orbi/m-p/1803961

No mention of automatic firmware updates anywhere in the manual.

FYI, I got this from a forum moderator:

"The FW v2.7.0.70 is for users that did not have CircleV1 activated. If user activated CircleV1 then they would get FW v2.5.2.4 update if not then they'll get v2.7.0.70. The team is planning to post first the v70 FW on our support site but no ETA provided."

Stay tuned.

2.7.0.70 adds support for the new NETGEAR Smart Parental Controls (SPC). I have the firmware, but have been reluctant to load it, as all systems on 2.5.1.16 are rock solid.
