Orbi 42 purchased in 2018
RBR40 won't reset and probably dead.
For home use. 2000 square feet down and 2000 square feet up .
200 Mbps ISP speed
What would be a reasonable replacement in the Netgear family?
Would you get a modem/router combo?
I have ordered a refurbished replacement from Amazon and currently using a Netgear AC1750 loaner which is working very well

You can try recoving it with tftp or nmrpflash.
are you on windows? if so, follow this guide
https://kb.netgear.com/000059634/How-to-upload-firmware-to-a-NETGEAR-router-using-Windows-TFTP
just make sure you enable tftp
https://www.thewindowsclub.com/enable-tftp-windows-10
and here's a video walk through using a tftp client. Use the built in one for windows 10 though. the video is more of an example of how its done.

and if that doesn't work, you can try using nmrpflash

Re: RBR40 won’t reset, what would you replace it with?
How do you know its dead/won't reset? (Details are key as fixing it might be possible)
For the speeds you're paying for and size of your home, its a pretty spot on setup.
So a refurb/replacmenet of the RBR40 is a solid option.
