RBR50 connection drops for FTTC NBN Connection
I have an Orbi RBR50 and RBS50 connected via wireless backhaul.
My connection drops every now and then (aprox every hour).
To fix the problem I have to login to my router's and do a DHCP release and renew and then internet starts working.
I am not sure what is wrong.
I am able to ping my WAN IP address when the connection is down.
What steps should I take to diagnose the root cause?
My step is just an out-of-box setup with no changes to the configuraion.

Re: RBR50 connection drops for FTTC NBN Connection
Is this is a modem only or do you know if it has a built in router by chance?
Has the modem been fully powered OFF along with the RBR for 30 seconds then back on?
What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?
Does a wired PC directly connected to the modem exhibit the same problem or no?

Re: RBR50 connection drops for FTTC NBN Connection
It is just a plan vanilla modem but supplied by NBNCo (Broadband wholesaler)- Network_Termination_Device_(NBN) - FTTC.
Yes turning off and on the modem temporariy solves the problem. But after an hour it the connection drops again.
But instead of the modem off and on, I just goto my router's admin page and do DHCP release and renew; which also temporarily solves the problem.

Re: RBR50 connection drops for FTTC NBN Connection
Sounds like the least is being dropped and the RBR isn't picking it back up or not able to get re-connected.

LAN cable been swapped out between the modem and RBR? CAT6 is recommended.
Might ask if the ISP can look at the logs on the modem to see if they see any of these disconnects.
Might try upgrading FW to v34. Manually install the RBS first then RBR. I would factory reset the RBR and then setup from scratch. Use a wired Pc and web browser to do this if you do.

Re: RBR50 connection drops for FTTC NBN Connection
Firmware update - I will try over a long weekend.
However I am just concerned about one thing. Why Orbi obtains the lease for only 1 Hour.
Lease Obtained | 0 Days, 1 Hours, 0 Minutes |
Lease Expires | 0 Days, 0 Hours, 35 Minutes |
Ideally it should be for 24hours.
Is it something that is in ISP's control?
So far my takeaway for ORBI I am not able to justify this much spend for such a simple Router task?
Can we ssh to the router and get some detailed logging?
At this stage I can only sympthesize with the non-tech end users of ORBI.

Re: RBR50 connection drops for FTTC NBN Connection
Your DHCP lease time of 1 hour is set and controlled by your ISP. Some ISPs offer a static IP for an additional fee. My ISP lease is 24 hours.

Re: RBR50 connection drops for FTTC NBN Connection
No Not really. I just compromised. Perhaps I will buy something else that is robust but simple.
I just ended up turning off the Satellite.
And I also ditched the Circle (Parental Control) feature. Because Circle settings get removed when you turn-off and turn-on the router. Therefore I can not be bothered to setup Circle again and again.
This router does need a reboot every other day. I think it can not handle high bandwidth parallel network traffic activity e.g. Multiple Zoom/Webex Meetings and Netflix Viewing etc..
Please note my network bandwidth at the source is not bad as I can easily get 90Mbps download at the source.
And I also ditched the remote management feature
And since then my connection got stable.
This piece of equipment is the critical component in todays world of IoT when everyone is working-from-home due to social-distancing.
I have now turned on the Satellite again just to see if I run the same problems.
Perhaps with the latest firmwares this problem may have gone.
But I am scared of making any changes as it may disrupt my kid's zoom online classes or wife's webex work meetings.
Ideally the technology does not need to be that complicated.
Perhaps I just need something simplistic that just works and my ISP provided router should have been good enough.
I am now sick of tired of solving these petty tech issues.
And honestly I think this equipment is an expensive piece of rubbish.

Re: RBR50 connection drops for FTTC NBN Connection
Should be just plug and play in 2020.
My Satellite is off (hardware dead) at moment so I know that’s not the issue.
Wifi remains ok during internet drop out, just Orbi looses internet connection. When I kick the service from ISP app and reseat the cable to the FTTC NBN box service is restored.
Frustrating
