Wired vs Wireless RBR50 V2.

Hi all,

I have a weird situation. My wife and I have both been working from home for a while, but this seems to have been starting up relatively recently.

I have a Verizon GB router hooked up via coax to the box outside. There is also a CAT5 cable coming in, but I do not know if that is the Internet cable or if the coax is doing it (I will test later).

I am not sure I can get all the features from my STB if I disconnect the coax from the router, so I am hesitant to disconnect that. Let me know if I am wrong.

That said, I have the Orbi hooked up to the Verizon router. I tried setting it up as a bridge, but it would not work. Setting it up as a router and using the Verizon router to be the DNS worked fine.

Now, I have my desktop hardwired to the orbi and I am getting 150Mbps. When I try wireless on my phone, surface, my wife's laptop or anywhere else, I am only getting about 20 Mbps. This is better than before I updated the firmware and restarted the router (I was getting about 8Mbps).

I tried wireless to the Verizon router and I get 150, hardwire to the Orbi, 150, WiFi (802.11a) and I get 20.

We DO have a lot of smart switches, doorbells, TV's and other items, but I tried this when none of them were active (streaming or in active use).

I would like to find out what is slowing this down. Any suggestions or tools you could recommend would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Wired vs Wireless RBR50 V2.

You'll need to contact the ISP to see wheather or not if there ISP router is needed or if you can connect the Orbi router directly to there interface box.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too? If there is a router here, This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and 📡 satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR and RBS📡 to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

Re: Wired vs Wireless RBR50 V2.

Furry,

Googling around I found the solution. I am not sure if this is the only thing I will need to do:

https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi/Orbi-slow-file-transfer-from-wireless-client-to-wired-client/m...

It was as simple as turning ON WMM.....

I was under the impression that things like MIMO, Beamforming and other "optimizations" could muck up the works, so I turned them off when I set up the system.

I also turned it off when I was trying to get the bridge to work with what I was able to access (I am not sure I tried to do some of the items that you are mentioning with the modem station, but I did do an IP passthrough from it to the ORBI.

For some reason this worked when the automatic/default bridge setting just refused to connect.

BTW, I turned off the nodes to see if that did it, but I found out that was not the reason.

Summary: Activation of WMM allowed connection to the 801.11ac rather than 801.11a (The suffix never tripped any alarms since I NEVER used that protocol in the past). I searched for 801.11a on Google, got that linked posting and it worked.

Thanks for the information on this, though and I am sorry I did not put the equipment specifics in my original posting!

Re: Wired vs Wireless RBR50 V2.

Glad you got it working. Please mark your thread as solved so others will know.
Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.
