Xbox and Orbi

I feel like a newbie posting this, but I am completely out of ideas and it's probably something stupid, so here I go.

I have an RBR 50 wired to my cable modem (Hitron gigabit) which are located in the basement. I have two satellites: an RBS50 on the first floor and a RBW30 on the top floor.

The issue is video game consoles...no matter where they are, unless they are wired, they are getting horrid wireless speeds. PS4, Xbox One, switch (ok this is only wireless but the speeds still stink) even if they are near the RBR50 wireless, when I run tests or use the orbit app and look up the device it's just awful. For example, the Switch is on the 5Ghz band, attached to the living room satellite and is getting 36Mbps on a 1000Mbps line.

On the other hand, my iPhone 11 is getting 585 Mbps.

I have played with checkboxes, volume strength of the signal, bandforming and I'm still all over the place. I do have a lot of devices connected (about 45), but still I would think the speeds would be better than they are. It's not like all devices are streaming -- some are ioT smart devices.

Would any group members have any suggestions as to what else could be done? Or do I just leave it at, yup it's in the basement, deal with it? 🙂

I have also tried using the Orbi as the router (turning on IP Passthrough on the cable modem for that port) and using the Orbi as just an AP).

Using RBR50 firmware 2.5.1.8 if it means anything 🙂

Re: Xbox and Orbi

What is the model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Yes if the modem has a built in router and wifi be sure the wifi is disabled fully on the modem.

This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected. https://kb.netgear.com/000036466/How-far-should-I-place-my-Orbi-satellite-from-my-Orbi-router

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Try enabling Beamforming and MIMO(MIMO may or maynot be needed) and WMM. Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings
Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, Circle, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Set Short preamble instead of Long preamble modes. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

Wired connections is preferred for most game consoles.

Re: Xbox and Orbi

Hitron CODA-4589. There is no "bridge mode" on the modem, but I do have IP Passthrough. I've tried it IP Passthrough ON (with the orbi in router mode) and OFF (with the orbi in AP mode). Both radios are OFF on the Hitron (2g and 5g).

Size of the home is about 2,400 sq ft. There's a basement, a 1st floor and a 2nd floor.

I have used "auto" as the channels at 2g and 5g. I will try different ones.

Beamforming and MIMO is on; WMM is ON for 5g on the orbi but not 2g.

I have not played with preamble. What does that do?

Thanks!

Re: Xbox and Orbi

Basements are not good places for main host wifi routers. Can you get the RBR to the 1st floor?

WMM should be enabled for both radios.

Helps in getting wifi devices connected a bit sooner.
