equipment advice and local installer recommendation

Help?

Our residence has a house with about 3,500 sq ft living space and a "carriage house/barn/office" that is about 100 feet to the north from the house and we have a boat pier that is also about 100 feet from the house to the south. We currently have two separate Verizon FIOS systems (one for the house and one for the barn) but would like to consolidate into a single system and would like to have a camera on the pier to watch the Ospreys annual nesting. The netgear technical folks say the 100 foot distance to the barn is too far for their wireless RBS50 device and suggest we install an ethernet cable from the house system to the barn for wi-fi and TV;  we do have an existing underground 4 inch conduit (for electric and plumbing) that would apparently allow us to fish ethernet cable through for a  hard connection to do this as an option if necessary.

Would prefer to hire a local expert to do the work so we can save the monthly expense of the FIOS system in the barn?

Thanks,

Daponder

A wired connection to the barn will be needed if you want to place a RBS at that location.

Any local company that installs security systems should be competent to install an ethernet cable.  There are code restrictions about placing electrical, plumbing, and communications.  I am not confident that both electrical & communications (low voltage) wiring can be placed in the same conduit.  In addition to code issues, it is generally not a good practice to have communications wiring close to and parallel to electrical wiring, even for short distances.  100 ft. seems "not a good idea."

Do you have a proposed solution for the pier?

Re: equipment advice and local installer recommendation

Thanks for the reply and YES, came to the same conclusion to NOT run the ethernet cable in the same conduit as the existing electrical. So will trench a separate conduit for the ethernet, coaxial and telephone lines to the barn/office . Found an ITS specialist who recomends Ubiquity Unifi products over Orbi and will set up the system components and then send to me with virtual hands on help. Includes UNifi POE Adapter, AC Inwall HD Office and outdoor Unifu AC for the pier/camera.

Re: equipment advice and local installer recommendation

You should not run low voltage communication lines (i.e. ethernet or phone) in the same conduit as power. Electromagnetic interference from the power feeds will mess up the communications signals.  If you do not want to run a buried ethernet cable, you may want to look into using a wireless outdoor bridge to be able to reach the 100 foot distance. Search for "wireless outdoor point to point bridge" on Amazon or other retailers.
