iOS devices

Running the Orbi formware 1.40.0.18 I've now experienced a couple of cases where an iOS device will infrequently get dropped off the network going from full signal to no wifi for upwards of 30 seconds. Mu-Mimo and beam form have both been turned off when this occurred.

Re: iOS devices

What devices are you using? I'm on iPhone 7+ and yet to experience it. Not experienced it on iPad mini 3 either. All the devices are running most current version of iOS.

Re: iOS devices

iPhone 7 plus ios 10.2.1 (14D2) and 2 Apple TV 4s running lat st production code. All connected to a satellite not the router. Assure you the is not a matter of down rev'd devices. I also don't have enough run time on the earlier orbi firmware to say of this is a new condItion or it has existed all along.

Also seeing infrequent airplay speakers sound drops 1 per hour perhaps. Worst case the dropping becomes a disconnect.

Re: iOS devices

I have noticed a few dropout n iPad Pro and iPhone 7 plus, it drops for a second,iPhone goes to 4G then wifi comes back, my iPad is wifi only so I just see the signal drop completely then reconnects.  This is not to often but it happens. An older iPhone 5s had the same issue.  I have an Android box connect via LAN to satalite and no issues.   Once again this issue does not happen often but I suspect it could be cause of a few VOIP calls drops whine useing Line2 on my iPhone 7 plus.

I downgraded to .16 and last night had no dropout on the Ipad.  Wondering is it the older sw fixing or something else going on

Thanks Tom for testing the old firmware to help me gather the info for the engineers if anyone else is experiencing connection problems with the .18 firmware let me know.

Re: iOS devices

Worth noting the apples iOS beta release notes indicate they are working on intermittent wifi drops, so it is possible this in an iOS issue, not Orbi.

Re: iOS devices

still having sporadic drops from IOS devices.  updated all ipads and iphones to the latest OS and they tend to only hold a connection for a couple minutes.

Running firmware version V1.4.0.34 on both router and satellite.

Android, Chrome OS, and Windows devices all run with no issue.

Re: iOS devices

What security setting are you using? I'm using WPA2-PSK[AES] with no issues with iOS devices. There is a periodic key exchange between the WAP and the device. In the past with non Orbi gear I've had devices drop connection because the exchange was failing. Driver updates solved the issue.

You could try changing the security settings or seeing if running open (temporarily) fixes the dropouts.

Re: iOS devices

i am currently running WPA2-PSK [AES].

i could try changing it to WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] to see if that makes any difference.

Re: iOS devices

If you are on WPA2-PSK [AES], then that's probably not the issue. You could try though.

One other thing to try.  iOS has a WiFi Assist feature.  This will drop your WiFi connection and switch to the celluar modem if your phone thinks the WiFi connection is weak.  This can cause WiFi dropouts.  You can try turnng WiFi Assist OFF on your iOS device.  It's under Settings, Cellular Data. You need to scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen to see it.

Re: iOS devices

I'm having the same issue with the router and satelitte. All my devices are running with the latest iOS. Router and satellite are on V1.4.0.34. Using WPA2-PSK [AES].

I don't think it is iOS as with the Time Capsule I never had this issue, only since I use the Orbi.

My iPad Mini 2 was connecting 97 times in 10 hours!! Unfortunately the log files do not show to which network (2,4 o 5 Ghz) or if it is connected to the router/satellite. This information would be quite useful to see in the log.

Here is the log:

Re: iOS devices

brasax, do your connection drops still happen if you try st_shaw's suggestion?

One other thing to try.  iOS has a WiFi Assist feature.  This will drop your WiFi connection and switch to the celluar modem if your phone thinks the WiFi connection is weak.  This can cause WiFi dropouts.  You can try turnng WiFi Assist OFF on your iOS device.  It's under Settings, Cellular Data. You need to scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen to see it.

Re: iOS devices

My iPad is wifi only..

On my iPhone I turned the wifi assist of but but no changes.. To be honest, this should not be the problem - 100 Mbit landline and reception with -35db. This should be enough not to switch to cellular network..

Just checked the logs.. My iPhone connected 136 times in 7 hours..

The satellite was disconnected once, which should also not happen as I have a solid blue.

Re: iOS devices

Thanks for the details... One more question - Do you notice brief outages on your devices from these reconnects or are you only noticing them in the log?  Others have reported slow web browsing on their devices but I also tried to replicate the problem last night, with or without WiFi assist, and even though according to the logs my iPhone 7 mysteriously reconnected a few times despite this setting being off I didn't notice any interruption or flipping in the wifi/LTE icon (though I also wasn't using it continuously).  I want to know whether it's an actual usability problem for all people or if it may just be anomalous log entries for others.
