new RBR50 (& RBS50) with firmware 1.4.0.18

Hello.  Just purchased a new Orbi AC3000 (RBR50 & RBS50).  It is restarting itself every couple days (seems random and results in ~ 5 min network/WiFi outage).  I was checking the firmware to see if it is "current" and it says it's on V 1.4.0.18 and it also says "No New Firmware Versions Available" in the status field on through the web admin.

I see that this version was released in 2016 (it's now 4 years later) and the Netgear support website says the latest firmware is V 2.5.1.16.  How am I this far out of date and why isn't some sort of a firmware update appear me obvious?  Did I buy an older "new" unit?  Can I update the firmware from 1.4.0.18 to 2.5.1.16?  Seems crazy to drop $300 on a new system that appears to be stuck 4 years in the past.  Who knows if this is part of my self-reboot problem.

Thanks for any advice.

Re: new RBR50 (& RBS50) with firmware 1.4.0.18

Thanks all.  I followed @FURRYe38 advice and did manul updates as followed.

Started at 1.4.0.18 (what it was shipped with)

Manual update of Satellite and then Router in this order.

  • 2.0.0.74 (Satellite)
  • 2.0.0.74 (Router)
  • 2.2.1.212 (Satellite)
  • 2.2.1.212 (Router)
  • 2.5.1.16 (Satellite)
  • 2.5.1.16 (Router)

Seemed to work fine.  Now running "current" firmware on both.

Thanks again....

I would go nback to the store you purchased it fr4om and ask the question about the unit.

You can get the official release firmware 2.5.1.16 from here and manually update:

https://www.netgear.com/support/download/

Just put in your model orbi and it will display the files for download for your router and satellite. Update the satellite first.

Re: new RBR50 (& RBS50) with firmware 1.4.0.18

To get from initial shipping FW to lastest v16, you need to install v2.0.0.74 on the RBS first then RBR.

Then you can go directly to v16 on the RBS.

I believe you will need v2.2.1.212 on the RBR next before you can finally graduate it to v16.

Manually download the FW files from here:

https://www.netgear.com/support/product/RBK50.aspx#download

Use a wired PC and web browser to do this.

If v212 can be applied then then can go directly to v16. No v32 needed.

However I think they will need v74 first...

Just playing it safe. Since NG does not have a define upgrade path like others.

Re: new RBR50 (& RBS50) with firmware 1.4.0.18

Understand. I Think safe would be v74 first, if that completes, then v212 then v16. I did experience this same path a few years ago with my friends Orbi, was at v1 and just happened to find v74. It updated then I was able to go the latest and greatest, at the time. Smiley Wink
